John L. "Jack" Oakes

John L. "Jack" Oakes, Jr., 86, formerly of Columbus, died Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at The Inn at Olentangy Trail. He was born November 22, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late John L. Sr. and Weltha (Sexton) Oakes. Jack retired after 20 years serving our country in the US Air Force. He also worked inside sales at Halmar Electronics and Sensotec. Jack was an avid skier and very active in other sports as well. He was an Ohio State Buckeyes fan and a very devoted grandfather to his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, witty personality and upbeat spirit. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Ann Oakes; daughters, Lisa Fontanarosa and Janet Oakes; and sister, Alice Hahn. Survived by his children Susan Oakes and John L. "Jay" Oakes III (Laurel Politis), grandchildren Theresa (Jason) Lowrie, Stephen Mamula, Abigail Ward, Taylor Oakes, Alex Ward, Zane Oakes and Claire Oakes, great grandchildren Kaylie and Katlyn Lowrie and Jack Mamula; sister, Betty Rechel; nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 2-4 pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd. where a funeral service will be held Monday, December 7, 2015 at 11:00 am.
