

Dr. John Shultz, 82, of Westerville passed away March 20 at Sunrise of Worthington. He was born and raised in Urbana, Ohio and graduated from Urbana High School in 1951. He received both his B.A. and M.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. He was a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band, Phi Chi medical fraternity, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha medical honorary. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital, spent two years in the United States Navy and then four years in residency, one at Riverside Hospital and three at Children's Hospital where he was elected Chief Resident. In private practice in pediatrics for 32 years, he enjoyed staff privileges at several hospitals in the Columbus area. He served in several capacities with the Poison Control Center, ending as President of The Ohio Association of Poison Control Centers. Memberships included the Central Ohio Pediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, he published articles in various medical journals and was a clinical professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He served as a member and officer on numerous pediatric committees. After retiring from private practice, Dr. Shultz worked to make Children's Hospital one of the best and safest hospitals in the nation. He was honored in 2000 with the Career Contribution Award for his lifetime commitment and service to both the hospital and the Columbus community. An annual award was subsequently established in his name. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Towler) Shultz; sons John Michael (Kim) of Urbana, Brooks Alan (Mary Beth) of Hilliard, and Phillip Toben of Hilliard; stepdaughters Julie (Toby) Haun and Pam Lindsey. Grandchildren include John, Kristin (Aaron) Gall and Kaitlyn, children of John Shultz; Cassady and Caroline, children of Brooks Shultz; Matthew and Megan, children of Julie Haun; Brooke and Shane, children of Pam Lindsey; brother Jim (Jean); sister Nancy (Sonny) Ginn; nephew Shane (Karri) Ginn, nieces Paige Ginn and Krista Shultz, Becky (Michaels) Shultz, mother of John, Brooks and Toby Shultz. Visitation at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington 43085 will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 where services will be on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Kingscreek Cemetery, 707 E. Herr Road, Urbana, Ohio 43078 at 12:30 p.m.
