Joseph Anthony Sabo, Sr. loved polkas, birthday cake and his grandchildren – but not necessarily in that order. He died April 5, 2010 after a long and brave struggle with heart disease and other health issues. He was born July 16, 1927 in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania to Frank and Juliana Sabo. He graduated from Hubbard High School in Hubbard, Ohio in 1945. He served two years in the Navy before returning to Ohio, where he met, fell in love with and married Eleanor Ann Gibala. Together they worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown, with Joe spending nearly 50 years working for Republic and its various subsidiaries. He lived in Ohio and Tennessee, traveled to London and never missed a birthday party for any of his three grandchildren. He grew roses, tried to grow dogwood trees and was a good neighbor wherever he resided. He enjoyed chardonnay, his daughter-in-law’s lasagna, lottery tickets and feeding his granddog (Sugar/Angel) in her special bowl next to the table at every family meal. He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Anthony Sabo, Jr. and Linda Thompson Sabo; their three children, Joseph Anthony III or Trey, Hannah Marie (her boyfriend, Trevor/Kevin) and Daniel; his daughter, Mary Ann (her fiancée, Jeff Ott); and his son, Stephen. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Della Sabo of Warren. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at 11 am. on Saturday, April 10, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church at 801 W. Cherry Street, Sunbury, Ohio. The family will greet friends, neighbors and relatives at 10 a.m. with a special polka service. A luncheon will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to St. John Neumann or Inniswood Garden Society, 940 S. Hempstead Road, Westerville, Ohio, to support their dogwoods.
