Joseph Matthew Zeterberg

Dr. Joseph M. Zeterberg, age 80, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 in Kobacker Hospice house in Columbus, OH. Dr. Joe was born in Rockville Centre, NY on September 26, 1942 to the late Carl and Margret (Driscoll) Zeterberg. Also preceding him in death were his brothers Carl & John Zeterberg; and sister Dr. Marie Zeterberg. Dr. Joe grew up in Baldwin, NY and attended Cathedral Prep Seminary in Brooklyn. He continued his education at Mount Saint Marys College in Emmitsburg, MD and George Washington School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Joe served his country as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Public Health Service where he worked as a physician with the White House. In 1974, Dr. Joe and Judith moved to Ft. Myers, FL where he opened the Allergy & Asthma Care Centre, in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, being the first clinically trained allergist between Miami and Tampa, FL. His physician number was 116 in Lee County and today this number is in the thousands. Dr. Joe had the privilege of treating multiple generations of families over the span of his 30-year career when he retired in order to successfully battle colon cancer. Dr. Joe began his “second career” with Hope Hospice where he served for 15 years and cited this as “the best job I ever had.” Dr. Joe enjoyed mentoring the hospice staff and caring for his patients as they went through the final transition process. Dr. Joe will always be remembered for his kind, caring and gentle way by his family, friends and patients. His final months were spent in the care of the Ohio Health hospice system where he gained the admiration and respect of all those who cared for him as he began his final transition. Dr. Joe will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 54 years Judith (Hicks) Zeterberg; daughters Kristin (Jim) Van Dusen and Margot (Daniel) Barr; son Erik Zeterberg; grandchildren Dylan, Avery and Ryan Van Dusen and Emerson and Madeline Barr; brother Tom (Lillian) Zeterberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
