

Katharina "Katie" Machmer, age 96, of Oakleaf Village passed away peacefully at St. Ann's Hospital on Friday, February 12, 2016. Katie was born October 12, 1919 in Torschau, Yugoslavia to Christian and Elisabetha Filippi. She married Dr. Heinrich Machmer in 1937. World War II forced the family to leave their homeland and they settled in Linz, Austria. In 1952, the family came to the United State for a new life in South Charleston, WV. Katie was a dedicated member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She worked for Lazarus and Classy Lady as a seamstress. After retirement she still enjoyed sewing for her family and friends. Katie is survived by her daughter, Elisabeth Zimmermann of Mendota, IL; two grandsons, Aaron (fiance' Celeste Gabel) Zimmermann; Adam (Penny) Zimmermann and their children, A.J. and Zach, adopted grandson, Greg (Jennifer) Machmer; granddaughters, Jessica, Cynthia, Kathy and Robin; along with great grandsons and great granddaughters; special friend, Sandy Dillon and her family who made Katie part of their family. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Henry Machmer in 1967; brother, Wilhelm in 1938; son, John in 2004; son-in-law, August in 2015; along with aunts and uncles. A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1479 Morse Road, where family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until the time of service.
