

Katharine Wead Jones, age 94, of Upper Arlington, died Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at First Community Village. She was born May 3, 1921 in Yellow Springs, Ohio, daughter of Ralph O. and Edith Hirst Wead. She graduated from Xenia High School and Ohio State University (BA, BS Ed.) She and John L. Jones were married in 1944. Kay taught high school English and history in Xenia, New Madison, Ohio and in New Providence and Summit, New Jersey.
She is survived by her three children, Carolyn Jones Allport, Tom (Diana Foster), Tim (Michele Bugh); five grandchildren, Christopher Jones (Julie Polhemus), Stephanie Jones (Christian Binggeli) Andrew Allport (Diana Vernazza), Walker Bohannan, Elliot Jones; and six great-grandchildren, Hanna and Sebastian Binggeli, Sylvan Jones and Elena Polhemus, Alexander ("Bear") and Henry Allport.
Kay, as she was known to her family and friends, served as an elder in Boulevard Presbyterian Church, as president of Boulevard Presbyterian Women, secretary of Hannah Circle and was active with her husband John in Couples Club.
In 1998, Kay was named as a "Northwest Woman of the Year"by the Rotary Club of Upper Arlington for her volunteer work, much of which was in the literary field. She served as president and vice-president of Board of Trustees of Upper Arlington Library, and secretary-treasurer of the Foundation Board, and library representative to the UA Cultural Arts Commission. In 1998 she was also honored by the UA City Council with a resolution of appreciation for her 16 years as a library trustee.
She served on the board of trustees of Thurber House and as president of Wednesday Literary Club, where she was a forty-seven year member. Kay initiated an alliance between Thurber House and Franklin Garden Club, of which she was a member and past president, for a four-year project to add plants appropriate to the era Thurber House represents.
She was a member of was a member of the Canterbury Unit of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, librarian of the Columbus Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, associate member of the Women's Board of the Columbus Museum of Art, and a member of the President's Club of Ohio State University.
Friends may call 4-8 pm Thursday, January 14 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. Private interment Green Lawn Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 pm. Friday, January 15, 2016 at Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1275 Northwest Boulevard, Rev. Preston Shealy officiating. In lieu of flowers those who wish to may make contributions in her name to The Upper Arlington Library, 2800 Tremont Road, Upper Arlington, OH 43221.
