

Katharine Kartsimas, “Kay,” 89 years, died on August 7, 2012 after a long period of failing health. Kay was predeceased by her husband, George James Kartsimas; parents, Milton and Freda; brother, Gus Berklas; parents-in-law, James and Katherine (Petikas) Kartsimas; brother-in-law, William Kartsimas; cousin, Richard Economos. She is survived by her children: Karen Kartsimas Burnard (Robert); Paula Kartsimas Sarrey (Michael); James Milton Kartsimas (Tisha); grandchildren: David Sarrey; William Burnard (Hannah); Katherine, Juliana, and Jacqueline Kartsimas; nephew, James Berklas (Lynn); cousin, Lila Economos Furbee; sister-in-law, Helen Kartsimas; cousins, nephews and nieces. Born in the “Ohio Valley” (Bellaire), Kay grew up in Cadiz where her parents operated the American Restaurant. She graduated with honors from Cadiz High School in 1940 and completed business school in Wheeling. After George’s service in World War II as a marine, Kay married him and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where George was a student at Ohio State University while working at his father’s restaurant (Piat’s, on campus). Kay worked as a legal secretary, bookkeeper, office manager, and was a PTA volunteer at her children’s Hilltop schools (Binns, Hilltonia). Widowed in 1987, Kay volunteered at her church, The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral; began volunteer work with the Columbus Symphony, Canterbury Unit; and was named 2006 volunteer of the year at Wesley Glen Retirement Center. Family and friends may call at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, on Sunday August 12th from 5-8 pm with the Trisagion at 7:30 pm. Funeral service will be held Monday August 13th at 11:30 am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Columbus, the Very Rev.
