Kathleen Ann Spang

Born on November 3, 1949, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Kathy was the daughter of Clyde McFarland and Phyllis (Dithomas) Shaffer.

She was a 1967 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School and retired from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office after many years of dedicated service. She was a longtime member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with friends through her euchre/card clubs.

Kathy will be remembered for her beautiful smile, generous heart, and infectious laugh that could brighten any room. Whether sharing stories, playing a game of euchre, lending a helping hand, or simply spending time with those she loved, Kathy’s warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Of all the roles she cherished in life, none brought Kathy more joy than being “Grandma Kathy”. She adored her granddaughter, Lilliana and loved her with all her heart and soul. Time spent with her family was her greatest treasure and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on through them.

Kathy is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Spang; her son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Kate Spang; her beloved granddaughter, Lilliana Spang; sister and friend, Patricia Denman; sister-in-law, Leslie (Charlie) Sorg; her nephew, Graham Roy (Stephanie Patrick); and many cherished friends from work and card clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde McFarland and Phyllis Shaffer; her father-in-law, George Spang; and mother-in-law, Lea P. Spang.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff of the James Cancer Hospital for taking such great care of Kathy and the family, and to other family and friends whose compassion, support, and prayers brought comfort to Kathy and the family.

Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, Kathy’s legacy of kindness, laughter, and unconditional love will continue to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
