Mr. Szabo was born on September 2, 1931, in Debrecen, Hungary. He immigrated to the United States during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, arriving at Camp Kilmer alone, without money or English speaking skills. He eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio, where he met his beloved wife, Wilhelmina, while studying at the Ohio State University. Utilizing his degrees, he started his own firm, Lajos Szabo Architect’s Office, and later co-founded several companies with his children, driven by his creativity and passion for design.
With his background in architecture, Mr. Szabo designed many well-known structures in the US and across Japan, including buildings for banks, restaurants, homes, and car showrooms. His most cherished architectural accomplishment was the family’s vacation home on Buckeye Lake where he planned, sketched, and constructed the uniquely-styled dome-shaped residence.
In retirement, Mr. Szabo enjoyed playing golf, spending time with his family, and traveling around the world with his Édesem.
A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road in Columbus, OH 43221, Ohio. A reception will immediately follow the service until 4 p.m.
Mr. Szabo is survived by his wife of 66 years Wilhelmina; two children Marcus Szabo, and Margit (Steve) Lister; seven grandchildren and their families; siblings Jolan Rabai and Karcsi Szabo; and by other relatives and friends. Mr. Szabo is preceded in death by parents Margit Szatmary and Laszlo Szabo, son Lajos Szabo Jr., and his six siblings.
