It is with deep sorrow and loving hearts that we announce the passing of Larry J. Carpenter, aged 88, who left us peacefully on May 26, 2026, surrounded by family at the James Cancer Hospital.
Larry was a proud veteran of the United States Army and dedicated 40 years of service to Columbia Gas, working in data processing. Beyond his professional life, he built a beautiful 63-year marriage with his devoted spouse, Sandra, establishing a foundation of love, faith, and community that will endure for generations.
Growing up as an only child, Larry felt a lifelong drawing to bring more people into his world. He possessed a generous heart that didn't need legal titles to define family—to Larry, family was simply built on love, presence, and connection. Recognizing the power of a strong support system, he naturally stepped into the roles of a father and grandfather figure for anyone who needed a steady, loving presence. Whether it was embracing lifelong, chosen family like the Moseleys, or informally adopting their daughters’ friends and grandchildren into his heart.
A man of deep convictions, Larry also found a spiritual home and a wonderful community at Advent Lutheran Church, where he and his wife were long-time, dedicated members. His faith guided his actions, and the friendships he forged within the church were a source of great comfort and strength throughout his life.
Above all of Larry’s achievements, nothing compared to the roles of husband, father, and grandfather. His six grandchildren were his absolute pride and joy. Whether celebrating their milestones or simply sharing a quiet moment, Larry’s face lit up in their presence, and he never missed an opportunity to share how incredibly proud he was of each of them.
Larry’s legacy of love lives on through his family. He is survived by Sandra Carpenter, his devoted wife of nearly 63 years. His daughters, Debra Amling and Andrea Scheuerman (Steve), and his six adored grandchildren, Caroline, Connor, Natalie, Jack, Carly, and Carissa.
