Lawrence F. “Larry” Benton, age 83, longtime resident of Orwell, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at his home in Groveport, Ohio. Lawrence was born in Warren, Ohio on April 18, 1926, only child of the late Nathella (Huntley) and Lawrence O. Benton. Following high school, Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served in WWII as a Master Sgt. in the 89th Infantry Division under General Patton. He then later attended Miami University and began working as an insurance agent. Lawrence was always active in his community. He was a 63 year member of the American Legion Post 719, zoning commissioner, volunteer fireman, and member of the Orwell Methodist Church. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and also had an elaborate collection of guns and swords. Never having a bad a word to say about anyone, along with his smile that could light up a room, Larry will be sorely missed by all his family and friends. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jean. He is survived by his loving children, Ken (Debbie) Benton of Groveport, Mary (Shawn) Bosscawen of Columbus, and Becky (Larry) Clark of Lancaster; grandchildren, Crystal, Amy, Amanda, Megan, Emily, Sherri, Jay, Jill, and Jake; great grandchildren, Blake, Abigail, Summer, Dakota, Hannah, Noah, Anthony, Lily, Isabella, Elizabeth Rose, Aaron, Evan, Emily, Elyse, Ella, and Grant; and many other extended family members and dear friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 614-861-6268. Contributions may be made in Larry’s memory to the Orwell American Legion Post 719.
