Marilyn J Huitger

Marilyn is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 40 years, Tom Huitger; her sister, Mary (Greg) Shipley-Smith; her stepchildren, Carrie and Collins Huitger; her cherished grandchildren, Amelia and Vincent Huitger; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives she touched.

Marilyn lived a remarkable life filled with adventure, purpose, and love. Raised in Columbus, Ohio, she moved to Washington, DC to work in a top-secret position for the CIA, later returning to Columbus, where she married and welcomed her son, Lant.

Later, after marrying the love of her life, Tom, Marilyn embraced country living on their farm in West Mansfield, Ohio, where they raised registered Angora goats and other animals. After the passing of her mother, Marilyn, Tom, and Lant embarked on a new adventure in Haines, Alaska. There, they made their home in a rustic log cabin, which Marilyn and Tom lovingly built into a place of warmth, comfort, and lasting memories.

She served as Manager of the Haines Chamber of Commerce and was one of the founders of the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival, an annual tradition that continues today. She treasured life there, from building out their cabin and embracing the challenges of Alaskan winters to learning how to rescue bald eagles and becoming part of the close-knit community she loved. Upon returning to Columbus, Marilyn continued her career with the Ohio Chamber before joining HER Realtors (now Howard Hanna Real Estate), where she worked until her retirement.

Marilyn will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp intelligence, and passion for the causes she believed in. She had an incredible memory, never forgot a birthday, and made those around her feel remembered and valued. Above all, she treasured her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Amelia and Vincent, whose lives were forever enriched by her love. Marilyn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, and her memory will live on in the many lives she touched.

There will be a Celebration of Life gathering on July 29 from 5-8pm, at the Amelita Mirolo Barn in Upper Arlington for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
