To Mr. Barren's Family:
  I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of such a wonderful man. My deepest sympathies to all of you. I am an alumni of the Hun School of Princeton, Class of 1986. I just recently found out the passing of Mr. Barren from the "Hun Today" publication. I had the great pleasure of having Mr. Barren as my Math Teacher in my junior year. Math never came easy to me to learn, but Mr. Barren was always very patient and helpful when I did not understand something. He would always take the time to explain things to me until I did undertsand them. I remember his love of sports, especially football and his many stories about coaching. I am so happy I had gotten to know him and that he was my teacher. What a young age to be taken from his family. May he rest in peace.

I FIRST MET MARK WHEN HE ATTENDED WRA IN 1978-79...WE WERE FRIENDS, DORM MATES AND CLASSMATES. HE WAS MY QUARTERBACK AND I WAS HIS FAVORITE RECEIVER...WHAT A GREAT GUY! HE ALWAYS MADE YOU SMILE AND LAUGH...I LAST SAW MARK IN COLUMBUS, OHIO IN THE SUMMER OF 1987 WHEN I WAS WORKING AS A LAW CLERK. We will remember Mark Barren as not only a football coach and a math teacher, but also a great leader and mentor on and off the field. Our thoughts and prayers have been and will be with the Barren family.

How fitting that the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1972.  After the 1972 victory, I remember being in the basement of the Barren's house in Lakewood tracing circles using the bases on the end table lamps, so that we could plaster Bruins logos all over the basement!  Mark was the best hockey player ever to skate through Lakewood.

    Mr. Barren was a great man. He was always willing to help, whether it was on the feild or off. He will be missed by all.

Coach Barren was a great friend and mentor to me. I remember my senior year, his first as head coach, we played Bexley on Senior Night at home. It had poured rain all week and the field was a giant mud pit, but we pushed them up and down the field all night and shut them out 27-0. After his traditional leading of the postgame chant, Coach B sat us down and said, "That's the best win I've ever seen. That's how we play ball, we kick ass and take names. Thank you for showing those p*****s from Bexley what Academy football is all about." Everybody went crazy, and we followed up that win by routing Nelsonville-York at their place in the first round of the playoffs before a tough loss at Amanda-Clearcreek. Out of all my fond memories of Coach Barren, that postgame talk is the thing I'll remember most, for the intensity and passion he showed. He loved CA, and he loved beating Bexley (he made the rivalry as personal as Ohio State vs. Michigan), but most of all, he loved us. There will never be anyone else like Mark Barren. He's one of a handful of people that shaped who I am today, and for that I owe him everything. RIP Coach. I love you.

Mark once found me waiting for him in his classroom and I had been passing the time by looking at the poster of the 2003 state championship football team that hangs on his wall. He proceeded to give me a game-by-game description of that entire season, even play-by-play for some of the thrilling moments in those games. He easily rattled off the names of the players, and not just the star players but also the unheralded ones who stepped up at crucial times because those are the guys he credited most for the victories. Although I spent way more time in his classroom than I had planned to that afternoon, I appreciated that he wanted me to know in depth what that glorious season was like. I will never forget his passion for Academy and for his players.

I was so shocked to hear of Mr. Barren's passing. 
It is so hard to understand why people are taken from us so early after such a life well-lived. 
Mr. Barren was always such a kind and friendly man to me during my time at The Academy. He will be greatly missed by so many of the lives he touched while he was there.

My deepest sympathies are with you and your family at this time of grieving.  I am praying for strength and comfort for you to get through this time with peace that comes from the knowledge that God loves you and will take care of you and your boys.

Many people have lost a blessing from God.  Mark always had a kind word whenever I saw him.  Last fall during an evening of parent-teacher conferences, what started as a brief "hello" in the Lazarus Courtyard turned into a half hour conversation about, well, everything--middle school math, summer vacations, college visits, Worthington farmers' market, and so on.  But this was typical Mark, snatching the moment and making the most of it.

My prayer for you is that you carry in your memory forever all the magical little moments you and Mark shared during your time together and that by these cherished memories you find God's comfort and peace.

I played High School Foot ball with Mark, He was a great QUARTERBACK! His dad was our coach. Mark was a fantastic individual who loved all people, rich or poor, popular or not. Peace to his family, I am sorry for your loss.

Jen, boys and family -

Words cannot express the sadness I feel. I have spent the day thinking of all of the fun we had while growing up in Lakewood; skating rings around people on Chautauqua Lake, watching Mark bean Richie Klein with a golf ball during the Pepsi Open at Sunset, Big 30 football camp, etc.   Mark was the kind of guy we all wanted to be; a great athlete, smart, and popular.  But most importantly, he was simply a great guy and a loving husband and father.  I last visited Mark shortly after the birth of James and I can still remember the pride he showed when talking about his boy.  Our careers and lives separated us, but we could always pick up where we left off.  I will miss him. 

May God's peace envelope you as you cope with the loss of Mark.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
