Hi there again Mom.  I sure miss you.  Today is Friday, April 9th, 2010 - not quite five months since you joined Grandma in heaven.  As you're probably well aware, Eva Varga, your friend on earth for many years, passed away on the afternoon of March 21.  She had taken a fall and broke her neck.  She lived a few days after that and though aware of the many visitors to her bedside, she peacefully slipped away on a Sunday afternoon at Riverside Hospital.  Her son, Steve Varga, asked me to write her obituary and also to be a pall bearer at her funeral, which I was honored to do.  Like you, she's moved on to another life.  I no longer have the opportunity to spend time with her, share my thoughts, hug her or wish her well.  If she's there with you, I hope she finds the peace that seems to elude us all in life.  As for me, my sweetheart Lori remains a fixture in my life.  This strong, yet delicate Audrey Hepburn-esque woman is the best thing that ever happened to me.  Your prayers that I'd not be alone have been answered Mom.  I know you loved her, as you told me many times.

And that's it from planet earth for now.  I love you very much.

Hi Mom. I write all these blogs presupposing that somehow the good Lord let's you know about them. That said, it's now been exactly two months since your passing. The other day I was reflecting on something curious. Grandma was born on the 13th, so were you. Grandma went to be with the Lord on the 23rd, and so did you. Funny thing, numbers. I'm still writing as you encouraged me to and seems I'm getting closer and closer to my goal of getting published. Put in a good word for me if you would. Lori has been a constant encouragement to me. She's truly a wonderful woman and the perfect companion. You were worried about me being alone after you were gone. Well, you met her many times and it's fair to say that you don't have to worry any more. I'm in good hands. Until next time, tell everyone up there hello and we'll all be getting together again in time.

Hey Mom, today while I was in the kitchen washing a few dishes that old ivory Western Electric rotary wallphone caught my eye.  So, I dismantled it and gave it a good cleaning.  Looking all shiny and new I thought of how many conversations it must have been privy to.  Geeze, I mean the phone was installed in August 1968 - when we first moved here.  I know Grandma spoke on it almost daily to A'mama and Evie Nene and sometimes to Mrs. Zarkany.  Mom talked to some of her friends including Lizzie and Ann Calderone.  Albert joked with his son Jerry, and with Leo and Roger and countless buddies from the lounges he frequented after work such as the Mare's Head Inn and Yolanda's.  Wouldn't it be neat if I could dial a specific date and year and then the phone would play back any conversation that took place on it then just by selecting a specific one from a menu.  I'd probably be listening for years.  Which is fine.  That's the heritage that old phone has anyway - lots of conversations and lots of lending an ear to precoius voices from long ago  Well Mom, just thought you might like to know.  Now, I'm not sure if the Lord lets you see thoughts posted this way but just in case He does, tell Grandma I miss her too and that I look forward to getting together again in God's time.  Save a seat for me at the dinner table.  We'll have a lot to talk about - in person.

As a month approaches since you went to be with the Lord on November 23rd, I find myself adjusting to your absence. You drift further into the past as time goes by yet each day brings us closer to a future date when we shall be reunited. Full circle. I can only imagine that you, Grandma and your brother Fred are enjoying your time together in a new life free of all the angst that comes with this troubled world. You're exploring eternity with wide-eyes and a full heart that I'm sure must be in a constant state of amazement. That's how it is in heaven, I suppose. That's how being in the presence of God must truly be. Rest, knowing that your journey on earth is finally over and a new and everlasting life has begun.  Rejoice!

It's now been over a week since your passing.  I think of you daily.  I reflect on both the difficult days as the early stages of dementia took away your kindness, but how later God restored it again.  In your last two years, you became one of the sweetest persons I've ever met.  And though it saddens me that you chose not to have any sort of commemorative service, posting my thoughts like this helps with bearing the grief.  I thank the Lord daily that He took you so gently in your sleep on a very early Monday morning.  You're with Grandma now.  It comforts me immensely to know that I shall see the both of you again in time.  This whole experience of your passing brings to mind the encouraging words of the Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians chapter 15:

"For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.  When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory. 
 
O death, where is your victory?
O grave, where is your sting?” 

God gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 

Therefore...stand firm.  Let nothing move you.  Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."

Never have I known those words to be more true as I do now.
