Martha “Marti” Lamoureux Hughes of Worthington, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2012. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on February 7, 1948 to the late Charles and Mary Lamoureux, Marti was a graduate of Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering and of the University of Dayton (1970), where she met her soul mate, her husband, Larry Hughes. Their first date was watching Larry videotape a local TV clown show, and they laughed and loved together for forty-two years. Marti was a dedicated elementary school teacher in the Dublin School system for over twenty-five years. She was often known as Mrs. Mickey by her students for her love of Mickey Mouse and Disney World, a place she and her husband and family visited often. The last time was in November on Mickey’s actual birthday. She was devoted to raising her children, loving her grandchildren, and to being of service to others. A long-time member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Worthington, she dedicated hours of time to the Pre-Cana marriage preparation program and the Pregnancy Decision Health Center. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer seven years ago, she determined that during her battle with the disease, she would help as many other cancer victims as possible. She founded a cancer support group at the church and was the guiding spirit behind several other support groups. In addition, she corresponded with many women with ovarian cancer all around the United States, often traveling to meetings where they celebrated life together. She was a proud member of the BGs, the NRs, and an honorary member of the UCC (United Circle of Cousins). She had many nicknames, including Margaret, Smarti, Grandma, Gaga, and Nana. Her zest for life, easy laughter, gift for listening, and thoughtfulness helped everyone who knew her become a better person. Marti truly was a light not only to her entire family, friends and students, but to all who met her. A special thank you is extended to Dr. David Cohn, Anabelle, and the entire staff of the Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital and the Gynecologic Oncology Clinic for their excellent care over the years. Marti is survived by her soul mate and best friend, Larry Hughes; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Jessica Hughes; her daughter and son-in-law Laura and John Shady; the “Fab Five,” her grandchildren, “the lights of her life,” Andrew and Justin Shady, and Aidan, Evan, and Julia Hughes; her sister Jeanne McCauley; her brother Phillip Lamoureux; many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, August 23, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St, Worthington. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am at St. Peter Church, 6899 Smoky Row Rd., Columbus, OH 43235 on Friday, August 24. In lieu of flowers, Marti requested donations be made to Gynecologic Oncology Research Fund #3093563, OSU Wexner Medical Ctr, 660 Ackerman Rd, 6th Floor, P.O. Box 183112, Columbus, OH 42318 Attn: Tom Muzyka; or Foundation for Women’s Cancer, 230 W. Monroe, Suite 2528, Chicago, IL 60606 or to PDHC at pdhc.org.
