Martin “Marty” Lee Hengely, 78, of Columbus passed away Sunday, October 13, 2024 surrounded by family. He was the only child, born on June 6, 1946, to the late John and Kathleen (Kelly) Hengely. Marty attended Grove City High School and after graduation enlisted in the Army where he proudly represented his country in the Army band during Vietnam.
After serving in Vietnam, Marty came home and worked various jobs in the tariff industry, ultimately placing him at Comtrac, where he met Ruby Fry in 1970. He graduated from Franklin University while working and raising a family. He eventually worked for and retired from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
Marty is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby Hengely, of Columbus; daughter, Abby (J.R.) Reynolds of Canal Winchester and son Walter Hengely of Colorado Springs, CO; his grandchildren: Max Hengely, Lucas, Charley and Blake Reynolds. As well his paternal Aunt Kathy McConnell; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends- John Berringer and Andy Manwarren. He is also survived by his number one companion, Tracker, who already misses following him around the yard as he did yardwork and pickpocketing him as he walked through the house.
Marty is best known for his humor and sharp wit, with a touch of ornery. He played Santa for many years- his favorite place to volunteer was the Heinzerling Foundation. Marty was also a certified softball and volleyball umpire for many years.
The family would like to thank everyone who reached out and prayed for Marty over the last months. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial and Reception on November 2, 2024 at Infinite Church, 175 E. Main St., New Albany, OH at 3:30pm.
