Mary Lou was born in Shelbiana, Kentucky, the daughter of Frank and Brooxie Layne. She was the fourth of six children and was preceded in death by her brothers, Don, John, Jimmy, Bill, and Joe.
Mary Lou married the love of her life, William “Bill” Dodson. They shared many happy years together before Bill preceded her in death.
Mary Lou is survived by her two sons, Shawn (Hilary) Dodson and Shane (Teri) Dodson; five grandchildren, Adam (Megan), Claire (Evan), Ben, Jordan, and Riley; and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy and pride. Her caregiver, Abigail, for more than eight years, was an angel and a daughter to her.
Mary Lou devoted more than 30 years of her life to serving as a school cook with Grandview City Schools and later Upper Arlington City Schools, where she was known for her hard work, kindness, and care for the children she served, as well as those who worked alongside her in the kitchen. Cooking was not just her profession but one of her greatest passions—there was always a kettle of soup on the stove when we stopped by. She also enjoyed doll making and found happiness in creating things with her hands. Perhaps her greatest talent was being the best mom, grandma, sister, and mother-in-law any of us could have hoped for.. Her grandchildren have countless cherished memories of time spent at Grandma’s, cooking, creating, and simply having fun.
Above all else, Mary Lou loved her family. Her warmth, caring, and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
