

Mary Vlad Marcu was born March 28, 1924, in Wheatland PA to the late Niculae Vlad and Katarina (Bottar) Vlad. She died on December 21st at Sharonbrooke Inn. She graduated from Farrell (PA) High School in 1942. She was 85.Mrs. Marcu was married to John Marcu in 1945. She was a homemaker and mother of five, a certified interior designer, and a passionate opera lover. She was active with the Licking County Symphony, Symphony League and Music Club.After the death of her husband, John, in 1984, she moved to Granville OH to be near her children and grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic community scholar at Denison University, where she studied music, art, and history. Her collection of operas on tape was unrivaled and was often a “lending library” for Denison professors. She was honored to be an Alpha Chi Omega sorority house mother from 1987-1994.
She is survived by five children: John “Van” of Flagstaff AZ; Michele (Michael) Higgins of Newark OH; Jules of Girard OH; Monica of Lancaster PA; and Maureen (Brian) Barkett of Granville OH. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a special friend, Maurice Singleton of Granville OH, who has been a dear and valued companion for many years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by three brothers, Nick, Jerome “Romy,” and John, and two sisters, Margaret and Katherine “Kay” Bunch. She is survived by her younger sister, Annie Swartz of Transfer PA.
After a local service with Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Service, she will be buried beside her late husband in Hermitage PA, where she was a member of Holy Cross Orthodox Church.
