Matt was the devoted husband of Rebeca “Becky” and a proud girl dad to Carson, Logan, and Bryn. His girls were at the center of everything he did. He was always there cheering them on, making them laugh, and finding joy in the everyday moments they shared.
He is also survived by his loving parents, Jane and John Schmidt; his sisters, Megan Schmidt and Mallory (Greg) Hansberry, and their children, Davis and Mabel; his Mamaw; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws who meant so much to him.
Matt proudly carried on his family’s legacy as the fifth-generation owner of Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, a business deeply rooted in the Columbus community. He honored that history while bringing people together through food, drink, tradition, and genuine hospitality.
Beyond his work, Matt was deeply invested in giving back. He served as a dedicated member of the Upper Arlington Civic Association, with a special interest in the Golden Bear Scare during Halloween. He also followed in both his grandfathers’ footsteps by supporting the longstanding mission of Charity Newsies, reflecting his belief in strengthening the community around him. His energy and kindness left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Matt cherished time spent on Burt Lake in Northern Michigan, especially fishing alongside his dad. He had many, many friends and treasured those relationships, whether watching a Buckeye game, having movie nights, hanging out around a campfire, or grabbing a drink.
Matt lived fully, loved deeply, and brought an energy that lifted everyone around him. His impact will be felt forever in the lives of his family, friends, and community.
