Nello Angelo Spagnol, 85, of Columbus, died Thursday, May 28, 2026, surrounded by family. Nello grew up in the Linden area, and attended St. Augustine School and Aquinas High School. Immediately after high school he joined his father and brother in the family cement masonry business, and later went on to establish his own company, N. Spagnol General Contractor, where he was a master of his craft for 40+ years. Utilizing his masonry and contracting skills, Nello built a custom home in Westerville that was cherished by him and his family for decades. He married his wife and closest companion, Charlene, in 1977 and made many beautiful memories creating a life together. Nello was an avid Buckeye fan, and enjoyed playing cards, grilling, hunting and traveling over the years. He was passionate about playing tennis and spent many hours on the court playing with friends. Nello was very proud of his Italian heritage, and served on the executive board of The Venice Club. Always a supporter of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities, he attended more swim meets, tennis and soccer matches, dance recitals, choir performances, and basketball, football, baseball, softball and lacrosse games than can be counted. What might be most remembered was being welcomed by Nello to sit at his kitchen table, whether it was a holiday gathering with family, good times spent with friends, or his cement masonry staff grabbing a cup of coffee before work at dawn. He loved talking and spending time with people he cared about, whether it was planned or a spontaneous drop-in. Nello is preceded in death by parents Elsa (Resi) and Tony Spagnol, son Mark Spagnol, and brothers Dominic Spagnol and Joseph Spagnol. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Charlene (Krenek) Spagnol; children Lora (Doug) Montgomery, Alicia Spagnol, Mandy (Bill) Butler Evans, Ali (Luke) Busby; grandchildren Spencer (Jess) Crawford, Josh (Rhi) Bailey, Nick (Karen) Bailey, Mark (Lauren) Spagnol, Danielle (Marcus) Carrizales, Julia Heringhaus, Leah (Angela) Montgomery, Cara Montgomery, Sam Heringhaus, Alexa Busby, Leo Butler, Hanna Busby and Jonah Butler; great-grandchildren Kade, Brody, Jake and Maverick Crawford, EilaMae and JR Bailey, Will and Casey Bailey, and Finley, Mark and Benson Spagnol; sister Mary (Steve) Basinger; and many cousins and friends. He will be committed to eternal rest at a private family service at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center, Ohio, with a Celebration of Life gathering to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers you may honor Nello’s memory through a contribution to The Alzheimer’s Association or Shriners Children’s.
