Oliver died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the age of 53, after a 4 ½ year battle with cancer.
Oliver was born in Washington D.C. and lived his childhood in DC, Atlanta, Nevada, and Virginia. He also spent summers with his family and his relatives in Germany and Switzerland. He graduated from Groveton HS in Alexandria, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He attended the University of Florida where he earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering.
Oliver's work was his true passion in life. Oliver is a globally recognized expert in corrosion technology. He began his career in corrosion working as a Senior Engineer for Arco Oil and Gas in Plano TX from 1992-1999 and a Senior Researcher at Southwest Research in San Antonio TX from 1999-2002. Since 2002, he has worked for DNVGL in Dublin OH most recently as Senior Vice President and Regional Technology Manager for Americas Oil and Gas. In addition to many other awards and distinctions, he was a NACE Fellow and served as President and Board Chairman for NACE International (National Association of Corrosion Engineers).
His other passion was his family. He played french horn, violin, and viola, meeting his wife while playing violin with the Gainesville Chamber Orchestra while in graduate school in Florida. He actively supported his children in all their interests, provided them with instruments and musical education, and instilled in them a love for classical music. He attended Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with his family and supported the music program there. His other interests include coaching kids' soccer, bicycling and motorcycling.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years Lisa (Gutknecht) Moghissi, his children Karl (20), Maria (19), and Alan (16), his parents Dr. A. Alan and Barbara Moghissi, his sisters Dr. Jasmine (Rocco Favia) Moghissi, Isabel (Tony) Dickerson, his brother in law Brian (Julie) Gutknecht, his Father in law Dr. Luther Gutknecht, his nieces Savannah (David), Elise, and Meghan and nephews Dominic (Cynthia), Christian, Joshua, and Kevin. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his mother in law Mary Gutknecht, his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and his beloved cousin Diana Moghissi Weaver and her husband Frank.
A celebration of Oliver's life will occur on Friday 5/25/2018 with visitation at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (5475 Brand Road Dublin, OH) from 2-4pm with funeral service at 4:30. Dinner will follow at Embassy Suites Hotel (5100 Upper Metro Place Dublin, OH) from 6-9pm.
Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the NACE Foundation or Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Music Program.
