In reading the incredible number of wonderful tributes to Oliver’s character, I feel that there is little more I can add: he was all that, and more.  I first met Oliver (over the telephone) in November of 1996; and subsequently had the privilege to get to know him better through work and numerous NACE activities.

Being around Oliver was, for me, an aspirational experience: I always wished I could be that smart, kind, diplomatic, funny, respectful, and impactful.  The positive influence Oliver had on everyone who knew or worked with him will be just part of his legacy.

To Oliver: thank you for so generously sharing your life with so many.  I’ll always remember you.

To Lisa and family: please accept my deepest condolences on Oliver’s passing.  I know that there is nothing that can reduce the magnitude of your of loss, but I hope you gain some additional strength from the vast community who share your grief.

I first met Oliver in January, 1988 when I attended graduate school at the University of Virginia to work with Professor Mark Orazem, who was also Oliver’s advisor. Oliver’s good sense of humor and friendly nature always made everyone feel welcomed. He loved good-spirited practical jokes.  We became good friends right from the start and studied side-by-side for the next four and a half years. 

About a year after we met, Mark accepted a position at the University of Florida and invited us all to join his group there, which we all did. Oliver and the rest of the group moved down to Florida several months before I (and my wife Rose) was able to move. When Rose and I moved to Gainesville, Oliver and his roommate, Matthew Esteban, were kind enough to volunteer to let us stay with them for several days while we searched for a new apartment to rent. This was true to his generous nature. 

I mentioned Oliver’s practical jokes before, which I recently shared with Mark. Several of us were each writing up our thesis over the same time period in the days when we used a common desktop computer in the lab. Locking your computer when you left the lab briefly was still not a common practice back then, so Oliver couldn’t let these opportunities slide by without a proper joke on his friends. We would often leave a chapter of our thesis open in WordPerfect when we stepped out and Oliver would sneak in and type an embarrassing phrase buried in the text somewhere, like “I love you Mark” or “Mark, I made this part up.” Eventually, one of us caught these snippets and soon determined it was Oliver at his mischievous best.  From then on, we all did a word search for “love” and “Mark” before submitting our writings to Mark.

I was truly upset to hear of Oliver’s passing and couldn’t believe we could lose someone so special at such an early age. While we were each busy with our families and careers, and kept in touch every few years, I always expected that after we retired, we and the rest of the gang would have a grand reunion at Charlottesville and Gainesville and tour our old stomping grounds.

I met Oliver several years ago during a course in Hovik and we got along right from the start. Since then he has always been my expert to go to with regards to corrosion. he was always available, always reactive even still recently. 
You will always have a warm place in my heart, Oliver.

Oliver is one of my oldest and closest friends.  We met each other as band members at Bryant Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia, and quickly became fast friends due to his quick wit and sense of humor.  We had many shared interests, including a love of music, and a willingness to decorate other band members homes with toilet paper.  I have many fond memories of Oliver, including trying to teach him how to dance before a high school prom, and driving around with him almost every weekend of high school in his father's VW GTi.  We grew into adulthood together.  I was honored when he agreed to be in my wedding party.  My wife and I were stunned and saddened to hear of his passing.

The warm feelings reflected in many of the posts by his professional colleagues comes as no surprise.  I have long thought of Oliver as one of the best friends a person could have.  He was intelligent and fearless.  I wish we had stayed in touch later in his life, and it will be one of my great regrets that we did not.  It is true that the friends of our youth are often the best and closest friends we ever have.  I feel that way about Oliver.

I extend my love and sympathy to Oliver's wife and children, his sisters, and his parents.  I hope you all take deserved pride in the high esteem in which so many held your husband, father, brother, and son.  I will miss him always.

I met Oliver at a Dublin Football League game our sons were on the same team and I was with a mutual friend.  Oliver and I became friends and I appreciated he style of humor  and him has a person.  We enjoyed discussion about fatherhood and many other subjects.  His passing is sad and he will be missed.

Throughout my 9 years in USA I enjoyed a close and trustful relationship with Oliver, both work-related and on a personal level. Oliver left a deep, lasting and strong impression on me. I enjoyed his company and greatly valued him for outstanding qualities, of which I will like to mention some:
•	Wisdom and humor. Oliver was always quick in getting to the core of an issue and very sharp to address it with a great combination of wisdom and very often with pointed humor
•	Integrity. Oliver had a very high integrity and always a strong sense of what is the right thing to do in a given situation. For example when we realised we had made some error in our laboratory tests, then he would immediately inform the customers about it and would gain their added trust in the process from the way he handled that situation.
•	Empathy: There is no one that read a situation as fast and clearly as Oliver, for example in a customer meeting. He knew exactly where each participant was – and was able to address everyone in a thoughtful and respectful way.
•	Helpfulness: We could always count on Oliver’s help. Any colleague asking for support, or simply appeared to need help, Oliver would engage in whatever way was needed to help in the best possible way, for the customer, for DNV GL and for the employee.
•	Mentorship: Oliver always looked out for the professional development of colleagues, and encouraged and helped them to engage in activity that supported their personal and professional development and brand.
•	Broad and deep competence and experience in many technical, business and political issues which made him very respected externally and internally. I have met many individuals – customers and representatives from authorities – that have expressed their deep respect for Oliver without being prompted.
•	And finally, I would say – as we have a saying in Denmark – that Oliver was blessed of having the “courage of own opinions”. This means, that not only did he have many and good views but he also had the courage to express them. Actually, he felt he HAD to express his views even when they could be controversial. We often heard him say: “Maybe I should not say this, but I’ll say it anyway” – and mostly his views were refreshing, original and well received. This was internally. Externally, however, Oliver would be clear and sharp – and always a true diplomat.
Oliver was a beloved and respected friend and colleague whose contribution and impact were immense. My respect for Oliver increased even more in the last and difficult period of his life, where he fought his illness with impressive spirits and determination, while at the same time continued his engagement at work and with colleagues – and kept asking whether he could do more while also expressing concern that he was not contributing as much as he used to. His commitment seemed endless.
Oliver will be sorely missed and he will never be forgotten by those that knew him.

I had the privilege of interacting with Oliver for years at NACE and PRCI.  He was always friendly and welcoming and had a ready laugh.  A group would be chatting and Oliver would invariably have a quip or comment at the ready followed by a laugh.  The conversation would inevitably turn technical and his manner would change and he would get excited and that very sharp intellect would come to the forefront, challenging, questioning, and sharing his thoughts and experience.  He was a great contributor to our community and will be sorely missed.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.  Oliver was a wonderful man and it was a pleasure to have known him.

I met Oliver when I was living in Dublin, Ohio. His children and mine attended the same Middle School in that city.

In the neighborhood of Dublin and its soccer fields, Oliver was a man of kind words and warm personality. He was always cordial to the soccer parents; regardless of where they came from, or the native languages that they spoke. Oliver had a strong sense of excellence, had a great respect for scholarship, and classical music always had a special place in his heart. As a result, he was a good influence to the people around him. He had a mix of many good qualities that I rarely find in one person, and I greatly admire him for that.

It is futile for me to try to use simple words to describe a fine character like Oliver, but an inscription from an old memorial in the West Minster Abbey somehow captures how I feel: “Mortals rejoice that there has existed, such and so great, an ornament of the human race.”

The news of his passing laden my heart with sorrow, but I find solace that he was blessed with a loving family and had an exciting career.

It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Oliver since he joined CC Technologies in 2002.  His door was always open for me and everyone else in the company. Outside of work, his passion for music and his varied interests always led to lively conversations.   I have very fond memories of Oliver and his family coming to our 4th of July Parties at our Hilliard House and engaging with my daughter on music education and music performance.  I think he had a profound influence on her career in music and I know for sure that he positively influenced many other people.  Words can’t express how much he will be missed.

So many memories of my good friend Oliver.  We worked together in two different companies, ARCO and CCT/DNV, and were close for more than 25 years.  

When we first started working together in 1993, Oliver was single and in an apartment, and used to say "How could anyone ever want to own a house - all that maintenance and yard work?"  2 years later, he not only married and bought a house, but decided he would get a manual, non-motorized reel mower for his lawn.  We all laughed, and decided we should all go to his house on Saturdays, sit in a lawn chair, and watch him try to push the mower around the yard.  I think the reel mower phase lasted about 3 months total!

Later, when he had just started to get introduced to NACE activities, he shook his head and said "should I even bother - what will this organization really do for me?"  Ironically, NACE became such an important part of his life as his career progressed, eventually becoming NACE president and a strong advocate for it. 

Since we were about the same age, we talked often about career ambitions, dreams, and regrets, both when we worked together and afterwards.  The regrets were few, the ambitions changed a lot over the years as we grew, and the dreams were always still out there.  One of the things he used to say was how lucky we were that we had options - so many people were stuck in a constant rut, he had the introspection to know that he was blessed with a great family, a multitude of friends, and a fulfilling career. 

More than anything else, I'll miss those conversations.

It is with deep sadness that I write this note to express my most heartful condolences to the Moghissi family on the departure of a loving husband to Lisa Moghissi and a caring father to their children Karl, Maria and Alan. It is hard to find comforting words that can lighten the deep sorrow caused by the absence of someone so loved, cherished and needed. But perhaps  knowing that his pain has ceased and that he is in a better place from where he will forever look after you, can give you strength to carry on through these shaded moments...this too shall pass. 

Oliver Moghissi will forever be in a most distinguished place in our hearts. My children Angel and Elvira and I were blessed by Oliver’s support since 2004 when I joined the CC Technologies team, shortly after evolving into a DNV Company, and now well known as a part of DNV GL. Oliver was an inspiring and trustworthy leader, with a sharp mind, clear vision and a candid personality. From the many lessons I learned from him, and the memories I have of him, my utmost treasured one is Oliver’s unbiased ability to recognize the value of his people and to empower them to take the risk of developing their full potential. It was a great privilege and honor to be under his guidance for 11 years, and to stay in touch with him through the NACE/ISO community and DNV GL’s consulting services. My sympathy goes out, as well, to Oliver’s friends and colleagues, he will be truly missed.

I was privileged to have Oliver as my graduate student. He joined my group when I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia. He had just received a BA degree in chemistry, and he decided to get a MS degree under my direction. Shortly after, I accepted an offer from the University of Florida. I was grateful that Oliver, like a number of my students, decided to move with me to Gainesville. Oliver was my sixth doctoral student, and he received his doctorate from the University of Florida in May 1993. 

Oliver was one of my first students to work on experimental applications of impedance spectroscopy. We had a steep learning curve! Oliver was the student who taught me that a nice impedance diagram on a dummy cell does not prove that the instrumentation is working correctly. His experiment was not producing understandable data, and my job, as Oliver’s professor, was to guide him through troubleshooting his experiment. I suggested that he try the test cell provided by the instrument vendor, and those data were perfect. I concluded (erroneously) that the instrument was working correctly and sent Oliver down a number of blind alleys, suggesting that he change his cables, his reference electrode, and anything else I could imagine. Finally, Oliver decided to call the instrument manufacturer and learned that a fuse inside the instrument was blown. Once he fixed this, his experiments looked great! I continue to tell this story every time I teach a course on impedance spectroscopy.  Oliver’s work and that of his fellow graduate students laid the groundwork for my book on impedance spectroscopy. Oliver was the source of another story I repeat often. He was hit by a car while riding a bicycle, and his life was saved by his helmet. I continue to tell this story as a cautionary tale to my students, encouraging them to wear helmets while riding bikes. I was, however, unable to influence Oliver’s enjoyment of motorcycles.

While he was in Gainesville, Oliver was a member of the volunteer Gainesville Orchestra, where he was second violin. My wife Jennifer and I began attending concerts in which he performed. One highlight, in 1990, was the performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with David Allen Ogden Stiers as conductor and Michael J. Fox as narrator. The actors were filming Doc Hollywood in Micanopy, and Stiers had a passion for conducting. Jennifer was pregnant, and I wondered whether the in-utero exposure influenced our daughter’s current appreciation of classical music. Jennifer and I became parents in 1991, and Oliver, like the rest of my students, helped us with Athéna. Oliver introduced Athéna to Saint-Saëns and the Carnival of the Animals. 

Since 2016, I had been trying to recruit Oliver to give a department seminar at the University of Florida and to visit my group. I wanted to do this, partly because my current students benefit from knowing and seeing their connection to the previous generations, and partly because, on a personal level, I want to stay connected with my students. Andy Jansen, Conrad Diem, and Doug Riemer, who were some of Oliver’s contemporaries, have returned to Gainesville. It was at that time that Oliver let me know about his health problems. I am sorry that Oliver was unable to visit us. 

My career has been built on the foundation prepared by my early students, and I am profoundly grateful for the support I received from them. I was learning how to be a graduate advisor while they were learning the science of electrochemical engineering. We learned together. Jennifer and I will miss Oliver.

It is hard to put into words the positive impact that Oliver had on so many of our lives. The tributes here and the memories we share together about Oliver always reflect what a wonderful and gifted person he was, and his ability to provide guidance in such a sincere way that put difficult situations at ease.

Oliver provided me countless insights and help with my career, but the seemingly small points he could make also made a huge impact in my personal life. One example was many years ago when we were having dinner at a bar in Dublin just to catch up. I was talking about various situations going on in my family and something he said made me step back at think about how I was acting or reacting toward my father. As a result, I changed my approach and rebuilt a friendship with my dad before he passed away, something for which I'll be forever grateful. There are many more examples.

We had many laughs together and solved some interesting problems together. He could be brilliant and take the high road in a conflict, yet still be goofy and have fun at the same time. He was someone I admired greatly.

Jeanette and I were privileged to attend their wedding.  

Oliver was a pleasure to  watch as he changed from a university vision of  good science to good science and economics. Oliver helped change the vision and direction of our group. He made a major impact as well as he brought us a lot of laughs  Then to watch him work through the chairs and become President of NACE was icing on the cake. 

You, Lisa and the children will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I know Oliver from his days as active researcher at South West Research Institute (SWRI).  We have had several discussions, disagreements, and laughs as he led development of various NACE International standards on internal corrosion control.  

He always had a knack of explaining what works in the laboratory may not work in the field.  He immensely helped me to understand practical aspects of corrosion control and to transfer, as he used to say, “from paper knowledge to practical knowledge”.

When I resigned as researcher to start my own company, he took time – on several occasions but especially during NACE 2013 - to discuss on activities that I should consider and that I should avoid that would otherwise drain energy and time.  I am also privileged that he wrote the foreword of my book.  

He sincerely wished us to succeed in controlling corrosion and that intention is well exhibited in many of his talks and write-ups.  One example, “...our genuine wish that our present and future colleagues will find success in corrosion professionalism” Oliver Moghissi, NACE President 2011-2012, June 18, 2013”. 

We all will miss his smile, gentleness and passion, but his thoughts, ideas, and insights will influence us for a long time.

Words can not explain the respect I have for Oliver.  But, I will try.   

Of course he was an industry icon and well known expert.  He had the ability to help and cause controversy, but he only did things he thought was right. 

Message to Oliver's family:   There is no other man on earth that loved his family more than he loved you.   We talked about it every visit to Houston (which became frequent).   Especially his kids, you were all a sparkle in his eye.   Even on some hard days, the room would light up when he spoke of his kids.   He was so proud of each of you and shared stories, and your accomplishments.

I have known Oliver for 20 years and have shared many laughs, stories, travel, and ideas. The memories that are uppermost in my mind are the various rides we had together starting with our daily car pool to work for three years in San Antonio, many trips between San Antonio and Houston, and a memorable car ride along the trans Alaska pipeline all the way to the Arctic circle. Oliver was an astute observer of people and provided me a lot of insights into how people reacted to ideas and made decisions. I used to joke with him that he put people in bins and never took them out of those bins. Actually, he was much kinder and more generous than that and was always willing to reevaluate his opinions. He influenced my thinking in a lot of subtle ways. He was an effective writer, concentrating on communicating the essential message in a simple manner. So, I always sent my reports and papers to him to see how he reacted. Generally, his comments improved my writing immensely. We shared an interest in classical music. I tried to influence him to like my favorite composer, Sibelius, but he was more successful in influencing my tastes than I was his. We have spent some memorable evenings going to symphony concerts in Oslo, Columbus, San Antonio, etc. But the one thing that stood out above all my impressions of him was how proud he was of his family. He was never boastful, but the pride of his kids' accomplishments always shone through. We spent a lot of lunches talking about his kids' various activities and participating in these activities always gave him great deal of satisfaction. It is indeed sad that he will not live to see those bright futures transformed into reality, but I am sure his spirit will live on.

Oliver, We will miss you and your wonderful way of dealing with problems whether personal or technical.  

I want to thank his family for allowing him to participate in so many different events and provide the guidance and intelligence that he shared.  May peace be with each of you.

Oliver was a colleague & friend for nearly a decade. Apart from his larger-than-life presence in NACE & leadership the Corrosion arena, one could not but help admire his astute technical prowess if one were so fortunate to interact with him up close. His sagely advice during the notorious North Slope oil spills in the 2004-2005 timeframe helped shape Asset Integrity Management for the industry as we know it today. I was witness to his fecund brainpower as he set about with the precision of a laser, collimated through a series of smart lenses, focused on systemic corrosion issues at Kuparuk. He made us “know-it-alls” look afresh at ‘non corrosive service’ redefined as ‘not normally corrosive’ on wet gas systems, which would prove prophetic in other parts of the company’s infrastructure. Such was his objective professionalism that advised without offense and inculcated without interference. He impressed the top echelons of ConocoPhillips Alaska with his expertise & pragmatism. Oliver delivered all of this with grace and his infectious, self-effacing smile that made it easy to swallow the mitigative medicine. 

As I got to know Oliver as a friend, I truly appreciated how he cared for his fellow man. The instance that stands out was when I sought his advice on post-retirement prospects with his employer on an attractive opportunity. He truly looked out for my self interest balanced against the current needs of the organization. That was probably among a long list of instances where his advice touched the person beyond the blandness of a thick resume; sales pitch with a heart indeed! 

That Oliver took on the battle for his life over the years with so much more than optimism should inspire everyone who knew him. I among his multiple well wishers, was rooting for him at every turn. Alas, “Only the good die young!”

I will remember Oliver as an exceptional colleague and friend.  Though not verbose, he never hesitated to stand up for what was right - for an individual or for the industry.  His absence will be truly palpable.  My sincerest condolences and prayers are with the family.

Truly a sad time. Oliver was a friend and mentor. I will miss him more than he will ever know.

Oliver had left Southwest Research Institute for CC Technologies/DNV before I arrived in 2003.  Folks spoke very highly of Oliver and missed his contributions and (more importantly) his camaraderie.  Having personally met Oliver on a handful of occasions and hearing him speak often, I know he will be greatly missed by family, friends, and colleagues as well as the corrosion community as a whole.

My very deepest and sincere sympathies go out to the Family of Oliver Moghissi. I always admired Oliver's great personality, tireless energy, and dedication to work and family.

I am saddened to hear Oliver has passed away. My thoughts go to his family.  To me Oliver was a great colleague, a very competent and kind material scientist and leader who was not afraid to speak up for what he meant was right. Clearly an inspiration.

Oliver is a very good friend of me and we both attended a Leadership Program at Lausanne, Switzerland and stayed very close to each other until the very end....He is a great individual with a very good sense of humor....He loved his family a lot and always thinking about them.
