Patrick James McCarren, 63, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at the Kobacker House on Sunday, February 15, 2015 after waging an unwavering battle against cancer. Pat was born August 9, 1951 in Columbus to the late Rose Marie and Richard L. McCarren. A graduate of Father Wehrle High School, he went on to earn his B.S. and M.A. degrees from The Ohio State University. While teaching in Southwestern City Schools for over 20 years, he also was owner/operator of the McCarren Construction Company. Upon retirement from teaching, Pat discovered a new passion as an Enrolled Agent and assisted hundreds of clients navigate complex tax issues with equal doses of education and advocacy at PM Tax Service. A hard working, self-made businessman, Pat was perhaps best known for always taking the time to offer a helping hand to any and all. In his spare time, Pat enjoyed working outdoors, whether that meant gardening, fishing, woodworking, or mowing somebody’s patch of grass on his John Deere. He also enjoyed woodcarving with Columbus Chippers Woodcarving Club, serving as Treasurer for the Northland Area Business Association, participating with fellowship and service activities of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church where he used to sing in the choir. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Beverly, children that brought him joy and made him proud, Patrick Ryan McCarren and Heather K. McCarren; his sisters Kathy (Harry Jr.) Hartman and Vicki (Steven Thacker) McCarren, his aunt Ruth Holbrook, nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to count. The family wants to especially thank the caring neighbors, friends, relatives, and staff at the James Cancer Center and the Kobacker House for their love and support during our journey together. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Kobacker House. We invite family and friends to attend the regularly scheduled 5:30 PM mass at St. Elizabeth Church on February 28, 2015. A dinner will follow at the church for relatives and close friends. SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made to www.schoedinger.com
