Paul was known and admired by many for his contributions of time and talent to community and charities in Central Ohio. He served on Boards and then Chair of the Boards for the American Red Cross, Creative Living, On My Own, Nelson, Levine, DeLuca and Hamilton, and United Way of Central Ohio - where he led Nationwide Insurance in winning the prestigious Spirit of America Award. He also served on the HOA Board of Directors for the Condominiums at North Bank, Daniel Burnham Square, and Seven Lakes West Insurance Committee. He instilled ‘giving back’ to his grands through the annual Christmas tradition of a sleepover and The Polar Express, followed the next day by providing a community service to various charities. He was also active with the Rotary Club of Columbus.
His most revered charitable contribution was and remains at the Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio (RMHC) where he served on the board for several years. After his retirement from Nationwide Insurance in 2005, he served 2 terms as Executive Director, leading the construction of two new houses. Today it serves 6,000 families each year; the Columbus, Ohio house is recognized as the largest RMH in the world.
Paul served in the US Army in Okinawa, Japan, during the Vietnam Era, where his role was the Colonel’s ‘Radar’, preparing him for his many roles at Nationwide Insurance.
Paul is most recognized for his leadership and mentoring roles at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. During his career he had 37 assignments in 37 years, humorously referred to as ‘the guy who couldn’t hold a job’. If there was an important, unpleasant job needed to be done, he got the assignment. He led numerous organizations within the property casualty company. He served in the underwriting and pricing roles in both Virginia and North Carolina before returning to the Home Office in Columbus in 1990. Other significant positions he held included Chief of Staff to the President, Vice President of Claims, Information Technology, Agency and Organizational Performance, involving the closing of several regional offices. Dozens of Nationwiders have reached out to say that they owe their careers to Paul. He expected much, and they rose to the occasion to be the best leaders possible.
The jewels of his life are his daughters. He is so proud of the life partners they picked, the careers they chose and the amazing children they raised
