

Born on August 30, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio to Emil and Rosalie Vanik. He lettered in golf for his high school team at Benedictine High School and caddied in the summers earning a full academic scholarship to Kent State University through the caddy program. He received a B.A. in Biology in 1956 and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree from Ohio State University in 1960.
During his medical career, he was a pediatric anesthesiologist at Children's Hospital for 32 years, Chief of Staff at St. Ann's Hospital, president of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists, as well as a lobbyist for the American Society of Anesthesiologists while also an Assistant Professor at Ohio State. He was a lifetime member of the OSU Medical Alumni Association.
He and his wife Jean were avid travelers and especially enjoyed hiking, including climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and many other mountains on 5 continents. After his retirement, he and his wife (a nurse) participated for the next 10 years in 20 medical missions to Central and South America for Vision Health International.
He enjoyed playing cards, becoming a Life Master in Bridge. He was a longtime runner finishing the first Columbus Marathon and many races during his running career. He also enjoyed reading about politics and history, murder mysteries, and books his children recommended to him. He loved golfing with friends, cheering for the Buckeyes, Browns, Cavaliers, and Blue Jackets, chocolate, potato chips, soy sauce on everything, and a good nightcap.
He was a devoted husband, father, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by his parents and son, Glenn. Survived by his wife, Regina (Jean) of 58 years; son, Brian and daughter, Diane; brother-in-law, Joseph Quinn and wife, Carol, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses who assisted in his care, especially the hospice nurses during his final days.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Brigid of Kildare in Dublin, OH at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 26, 2021. Masks will be required in the church. No visitation is scheduled. Private burial will be held at a later date.
