Before I embark on this journey, I want to ask you a question: when you hear the name Qiong Feng Wu, what words immediately comes to mind? If you are like me, there is no way to narrow it to one word. Let me share a few adjectives that come to mind: caring, sharing, strong, encourager, thankful, storyteller, singer, creative and a woman of faith.  
One of my earliest memories I have with my grandmother was when she first arrived in the states. My grandmother walked me out to the bus stop everyday to go to school. After school, she would picked me up and bring me home, then start preparing dinner with my grandfather. One day, my sister Donna and I decided to have some fun and found bottles of our sister Anna’s baby powder. One can imagine the amount of fun we got into, along with the mess it created. 
We didn’t know better at the time, and decided to have a baby powder fight running around the bedroom and living room squirting powder everywhere. When we finished the baby powder, we began playing with our pillows. Throwing and hitting each other we created a huge mess in our small apartment at the time. 
By the time grandmother noticed what we have done to the house, she was furious with us. I ran knowing I was in trouble and was to blame for the mess being the older one and Donna was brave and stayed talking back. She was always braver than I as a child. When grandmother picked up that feather duster and smack the dining room table, Donna threatened to call the cops. 
Grandmother didn’t know the laws back then because of the cultural differences, but instead of getting angry, she began to laugh. She had the patience of a saint, and an incredible sense of humor. This incident even became a family joke. As we grew older, our grandmother would always use this story to poke fun and remind us how naughty we were as a child.  
Growing up with our grandmother is a blessing as she helped teach us about our  cultural heritage. I particularly benefited as I have chosen to live in China and start a family. Thanks to her, what might have been a complete cultural shock, became a way of life.  She is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. She showed incredible strength by moving to the states to help take care of my siblings and me. Despite all the cultural, language, and financial challenges that come with immigrating to a new country, she never gave up. She sacrificed and left everything she knew behind so that her family could have a better life. I learned from her that nothing is impossible, and we just need to be strong to overcome any obstacle that comes our way. 
This tenacity is her legacy, something that I will take and pass it on to my son Jacky. 
Without my grandmother raising me, taking care of me as a child, I am not sure who or what I will be like today. One thing I am sure of is, I will not be who I am today without her influence in my life, standing here with my son Jacky. 
At last, I would like to say ‘Thank you, grandma’ for always being here for me. For being the rock in my life, for always lending an ear and shoulder when I needed it. I have and will always love you with all my heart. You mean the world to me, and you will be missed.
