

Richard Schmidt (95) died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 17, 2018 at St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville OH, of multiple organ failure. Born on September 21, 1923 in Flint, MI to Christ and Eva Schmidt, he was the 3rd of 5 children. Learning farming and carpentry as a child, he graduated from the Arthur Hill Trade School and was drafted into the military in 1941. He graduated in flight class 44-K (California), flew in WW II in Europe, and then worked for military intelligence. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of active duty, and then worked for IBM for 26 years. An avid coin collector and wood worker, he was surrounded by friends during his retirement years, keeping busy with breakfasts, singing, and discussion groups. Richard was preceded in death by Christiana, his wife of 60 years, and leaves behind his daughter Ana (Dave) Grum, granddaughters Christie (Andrew) Crabtree and Stacey (Travis) Dillion, and three greatgrandchildren – Morgan, Layne, and Madison. Cremation is entrusted to Schoedinger Worthington Chapel. Inurnment will be held in the future at Arlington National Cemetery.
