Robert A. Greenberg, 87, of Columbus, died Nov. 8, 2015, from complications resulting from a fall at his Creekside at the Village home. A resident of Bexley and Columbus since May 1961, he was born Dec. 6, 1927, at Rochester, N.Y., to Stephen and Lillian (Green) Greenberg. His parents, and his wife of nearly 53 years, Joan Lerner Greenberg, preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Nelson (Goldie) Greenberg of Port Washington, N.Y. and his sister, Esta (Jack) Kaplan of Columbus, Ohio. He was graduated from Brighton High School in Rochester, N.Y., in 1945, and went on to be graduated with high academic honors from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. While at Penn, he was a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. A medical issue uncovered after induction precluded him from serving his nation in the U.S. Army. His "romance" with numbers led him to a career as a stockbroker, working for several firms as a broker and field office manager at companies including Bache and Co., W.E. Hutton and Co., Shearson Hammill and Robert W. Baird and Co. He was an avid inland sailor and a former longtime member of Hoover Yacht Club. He also was a staunch supporter of the football and men's basketball teams at The Ohio State University, a lover of dogs, a voracious reader, a tournament bridge player, a tennis player, a traveler, a flower gardener and a photographer, as well as a highly interested observer of conservative politics and world events, among other pursuits. His greatest loves, though, were his family members, especially his grandchildren, whom he commanded jokingly to address him as "Honorable Grandfather," which they sometimes actually did without missing a beat from early ages onward. He is survived by his sons, Stephen (Sarah) Greenberg of Carmel, Ind.; and Peter Greenberg of Thornville, Ohio; grandchildren Anne (Austin) Schweiger of Carmel, Ind., and Rachel Greenberg of Carmel, Ind.; Emily Greenberg and Samuel Greenberg of Columbus, Ohio, and their mother, Jennifer Greenberg; nephew D. Sparky (Andrea) Lerner of Suffolk, Va.; niece Linda (Michael) Firnstahl of Suffolk, Va.; niece Leslie (Michael) Koenig of Leesburg, Va.; niece Ellen Lerner Cyr of West Hartford, Conn; nephew Andrew (Theresa) Lerner of West Hartford, Conn.; nephew Lawrence Greenberg of Delray Beach, Fla.; niece the former Lisa Greenberg of greater New York City; and brothers-in-law Dr. Martin (Gerline) Lerner of Suffolk, Va., and Robert Lerner of West Hartford, Conn. A private service will be held Nov. 18, 2015, at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations in his memory are made to either Hoover Sailing Club Learn to Sail Program (P.O. Box 575, Westerville, Ohio, 43086) or the Arthritis Foundation (donate.arthritis.org). The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the trauma and comfort-care staffs at Riverside Methodist Hospital for their skilled and steadfast efforts on his behalf. (Arrangements by Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Service, Columbus, Ohio.)
