
Robert H. McCormick, age 90, of Upper Arlington, died early Sunday morning, May 9th, 2010 at the Kobacher Hospice in Columbus, Ohio. His family was at his side and he was at peace. Bob was born on May 14, 1919 in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. McCormick. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School and got his undergraduate degree from Ohio State University in 1941 where he was a member of the Tower Club and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and served as class president in his junior year. He went with IBM immediately upon graduation and left in 1952 to join Flack Equipment Company in Dayton. In 1961, he returned to IBM in Columbus from which he retired. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Army Quartermaster Corps and he attained the rank of Captain. He was a member of First Community Church and a former member of the Scioto Country Club.
Bob was a social person with a sense of humor and a love of life that was strongly felt by those around him, including those within the First Community Village Chelsea independent living community where he lived for the past three years. He was well known for his fighting spirit and unflagging determination as he faced the challenges of aging. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jane (married December 23, 1942 in Cody, Wy) and his older sister Mary Jean of Mansfield, Ohio. He is survived by his son Robert Jr. of Lugano Switzerland, James (Betsy) of Wayland, Ma, Michael (Diana) of Santa Fe, NM, Kimberly of German Village, Carol of Terrace Park, Oh and grandchildren Rose Willow and Jason of Portland, Or, Jesse McCormick of Georgetown, DC, Andrew Machles of Chicago, Il and Jonathan and Maren Machles of Terrace Park, Oh. Arrangements by Schoedinger Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Rd. There will be an open memorial service at the Burkhart Chapel within the First Community Church at 1320 Cambridge Blvd on Monday May 17th at 1:00 pm.
