We had not been in contact since our last class reunion and everyone gravitated to Ron. His wife was a delight and really got asking well with a bunch of strangers. Alicia, Betty and Family,

 

When I got your message that Ron had gone home to be with the Lord, I began to cry. Then I began thinking about the great times I shared with Ron and Betty when they came to Los Angeles to visit. In September 2009, USC was playing Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. I called Ron and told him I would be going to the game. He told me that I better stop by and visit him and Betty. The first thing I did when I got to Columbus was go to their home with a friend of mine. We knocked on your parent's door and he answered with a great big smile. He stared up and down at me and my friend, because we both were wearing USC Trojan shirts. He said, “I know you guys came a long way, but I’ll let you in anyways, even though I’m a Buckeye.” We all had a good laugh at that moment. Every time I talked to Ron, on the phone or in person, we always found something to laugh about. I feel extremely blessed that the Lord allowed me to know him. I will miss him dearly. My heart and prayers are with you,Betty and your family.

Dear Alicia and Family,

There are few things in life as powerful as the death of a beloved father.  I did not know Ron, except through his influence on Alicia's life. In her I have seen strong loyalty, a heart that is passionate, a depth of joy which defies all circumstances,  and the soul of a fierce warrior.  In as much as those qualities exist among you, the man you loved as a father, husband, brother, and friend is not gone - just out of sight.  In the midst of sadness may you have enough light to see that the shadows come from being gathered under the protective wings of God's love for you. May memories of a smile, a hug, or a wise word help heal the emptiness and grant you the courage to move into each new day together. Grace and peace to you in this day and in all the days to come.

I first met Mr. and Mrs. Cole at a bar/dance place in San Diego! I cannot remember why we were there, something Alicia had organized no doubt! I fell in love with both of them! Over the years whenever they came out I did my best to see them. I will never forget standing in a circle in Alicia's apartment and Mr. Cole asked me to pray! I was so honored. It was my privilege and joy to have known this man of integrity, strength and great faith. Alicia told me on my wedding day that my husband and I reminded her of her parents. I pray that we can be the kind of example of marriage that Mr. and Mrs. Cole are: so in love, honoring one another, united and truly best friends. I love them so and I am ever grateful to the man who gave me Alicia, my sister, my friend. My heart is broken right now but I am thanking Jesus Christ for graciously receiving our dear brother into His glorious presence. Until we meet again, Mr. Cole.

To the Cole Family,

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you mourn a man of strength, character and integrity. I only know Mr. Cole through his brave and resilient daughter, Alicia; and it is clear to me from her many discussions about her parents, Ron and Betty,  that perseverance and grace, deep faith and unrelenting optimism are a part of the Cole DNA.
May God comfort  you during this time and fill you with rich and loving memories to last a lifetime.

Bob and I enjoyed the times spent with Ron (Betty & Alicia too). Sorry we didn’t get another chance to meet up for that meatloaf I owed you.  We love and miss you Cole family.  Prayers for the days ahead.

Ron and Alicia's Mom, Betty, were instrumental in Alicia's survival from hospital acquired infections. That is how I and many patient safety activists know him. We are all indebted to them both for raising and caring for our fellow advocate. My heart goes out to those who knew and loved Ron - those whose lives are changed by this loss. Through Alicia, I know her father, Ron and her mom, Betty.  I have never met them but I know what wonderful, loving people they are because of their love and care for Alicia as she fought hospital acquired infection after infection.  Her dad's background speaks to his strength and fortitude.  He passed that on to Alicia.  

To his family I send my condolences. He may have left this world, but he truly lives in your hearts and through your actions forever.  Lisa Freeman

I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Cole, but I do know his daughter, Alicia.  And, knowing Alicia, tells me that Mr. Cole was an honorable, kind, fun, loving man. His daughter is that and so much more and I know that he gave her tools to navigate this world that will keep her safe and keep her giving to others.  I am sorry for this family and all of his friends’ loss. Grateful for the time you all had with him and I know, having lost my parents, no longer how long he was here, it wasn’t long enough.
