

Rosemarie Adele Riechel, age 81, died peacefully in her sleep on November 13, 2018. A resident of the Forum at Knightsbridge since 2012, and patient in the Forum Health Care Center, under Hospice Care since July of this year, Rosemarie was originally from Whitestone, Queens, NY. She was born in Landau, in the Rheinpfalz, Germany, November 29, 1937. After having been graduated from Newtown High School, Elmhurst, Queens, she received her B.A. from Hunter College, and began a fine career as a librarian. She received an M.S. and then a doctoral degree in Library Science from Columbia University. Rosemarie worked for many years as a supervising research librarian at the Queens Borough Public Library, in Jamaica, and became the author of a number of technical books: Easy Information Sources for ESL, Adult Learners and New Readers; Public Library Services to Business; Personnel Needs and Changing Reference Service; Improving Telephone Information and Reference Services in Public Libraries. She also wrote a number of stories for children, among them Flight To Freedom: Two Parrot Stories; A Rescue in Cyberspace; Tina and Peter. She was still working on another writing project when illness overtook her. One of Rosemarie's favorite pursuits was the study of bird life. She named her pet parrot "Dewey"-after the library Dewey-Decimal catalog system. She was a member of the Long Island Parrot Society, The Long Island Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the American Library Association. Rosemarie is survived by her brother, Dr. Donald C. Riechel, who looked after her needs during her years at the Forum, with the superb assistance of his three daughters, Jeanne Beaver, Erika McCleese, and Silvia Idziorek; Rosemarie loved her three nieces, and they were united in their love for a wonderful aunt.
