The Earth's story is written in stone. Professor Russell Utgard spent a lifetime teaching others how to read it.

As a professor in The Ohio State University's Department of Geology, author of numerous geology books and field guides, mentor, and lifelong educator, Russ believed the world's greatest classroom had no walls. The most important lessons were learned with dusty boots, a rock hammer, and curious students exploring the landscapes beneath their feet. His Geology Field Camp courses became legendary—not simply for the science they taught, but for the confidence, friendships, and lifelong love of learning they inspired.

Dr. Russell "Russ" Utgard passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, after several months under Hospice care, just three days before his 93rd birthday. He leaves behind a legacy built on curiosity, integrity, education, adventure, and an unwavering love for his family.

Russ was born on July 30, 1933, on his family's hatchery farm in western Wisconsin, where hard work was simply a way of life. Growing up on a farm with thousands of White Leghorn laying hens, he learned responsibility, perseverance, and an appreciation for the outdoors that stayed with him throughout his life. Proud of his Norwegian heritage, Russ possessed the quiet strength, resilience, and humility often associated with his Scandinavian roots.

Following high school—where he was proudly elected Prom King—Russ answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy. Stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar in California during the Korean War era, he embraced every opportunity to explore Southern California, often recalling visits to the beaches with a smile and the observation, "That's where the girls were!" During one leave, he famously hitchhiked the entire distance from California back to Wisconsin, relying on the kindness of truck drivers and strangers along the way. He was honorably discharged on August 20, 1954.

One of those trips home changed the course of his life.

While on leave, a mutual friend arranged a blind date with a young woman named Doris Schaffer. Their courtship continued through handwritten letters while Russ completed his military service. They married soon afterward and shared more than 65 wonderful years together, building a life centered on faith, family, education, and service. Even after all those years, Russ never forgot the simple joys of surprising Doris with thoughtful gifts, including the blue cashmere sweater she always remembered as her favorite Christmas present.

After completing his education, Russ discovered his life's calling in geology. As a professor in The Ohio State University's Department of Geology, he inspired generations of students to experience geology where it truly comes alive—in the field. Whether mapping rock formations beneath the desert sun, hiking mountain ridges, or teaching students to observe the landscape with a geologist's eye, Russ believed the best education came through firsthand experience. His passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom as the author and co-author of several respected geology books and field guides, allowing his knowledge and enthusiasm to educate students and professionals far beyond The Ohio State University.

His summers at OSU's Geology Field Camp became legendary among former students. Long days in the field were filled not only with scientific discovery but with laughter, mentorship, friendship, and lifelong memories. To Russ, field camp wasn't merely another class; it was where future geologists gained confidence, enduring friendships were forged, and young scientists learned to think independently. Years later, many of those students still remembered Professor Utgard not simply for what he taught, but for how he taught—with patience, encouragement, enthusiasm, and genuine care for every student who crossed his path. One former student recently described him as "truly a gemstone." Others affectionately called him their "Rock Star," a nickname Russ embraced with a smile. His Buckeye pride never faded—his home Wi-Fi network was named Buckeye4ever.

Outside the classroom, Russ found happiness in simple pleasures. He was an accomplished gardener whose yard reflected the same patience and attention to detail that defined his teaching. A devoted Buckeye football fan, he attended nearly every OSU home football game for more than four decades. He remained active throughout his life, enjoyed traveling, cherished visits with friends and neighbors, and never lost his appreciation for a good story, a beautiful landscape, or time spent outdoors.

Russ and Doris were devoted members of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church for many years. Their faith remained a steady foundation throughout their lives, and the friendships formed there became an extension of their family.

Above every professional accomplishment stood Russ's greatest pride—his family. He is survived by his children, Louise (Richard) Konrath, Thomas (Cathy) Utgard, and Jane (John Cherney) Utgard; grandchildren Gretchen (Andrew) Berg, Mariah (Daniel Blanchard) Konrath, Patrick Konrath, Judson Utgard, and Nicholas Utgard, and three great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members, dear friends, former students, colleagues, and neighbors whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Those fortunate enough to know Russ will remember a man whose calm wisdom carried great weight, whose generous spirit lifted others, and whose love of learning never faded. His influence cannot be measured only by papers published or classes taught, but by the thousands of students he encouraged, the colleagues he mentored, and the family he loved so deeply. Like the landscapes he spent his career studying, his legacy was shaped patiently over time and will endure for generations.

A Memorial Service celebrating Russ's life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43321.

Russ believed that some of life's greatest lessons are learned with a rock hammer in one hand, a topographic map in the other, and good friends beside you. Through this memorial fund, future generations of students will continue to experience the same hands-on education and lifelong friendships that meant so much to him.

A life is measured not by the rocks we collect and study, but by the lives we help shape. By that measure, Professor Russell Utgard leaves behind a mountain of gratitude. His legacy lives on in his family, his friends, his former students, the books he authored, and the generations of geologists who will continue learning through the Russell O. Utgard Field Geology Memorial Fund.
