

Born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, Ruth was one of seven children born to the late John and Elsie (Rodebaugh) Madden. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing. Following graduation, Ruth enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. During World War II, she began her distinguished nursing career as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps.
After her military service, Ruth continued her lifelong dedication to caring for others through her work as a registered nurse. She served at St. Ann’s Hospital and retired from St. Anthony Hospital after many years of compassionate and devoted service.
Ruth found great joy in gardening and was especially proud of the beautiful tomatoes and roses she cultivated each year. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting, creating treasured gifts and keepsakes for family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Paul L. Smith, Sr.; her daughter, Barbara Louise; granddaughter, Michelle Richmann; grandson, Stephen Smith; and her six siblings.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her children, Paul L. Smith, Jr., Jeanne (David) Webster, and David (Mary) Smith; grandchildren Joe, Nick, Amy, and Christy; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Schoedinger East, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43232, where a funeral service will begin at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Luminary Hospice.
