

Sallie Mae Streaty (Gray), 82, passed away on March 13, 2025, in Montgomery, Alabama. Born on December 19, 1942, in Valdosta, Georgia, she lived a life marked by dedication to her family, faith, and community.
Sallie graduated from Wilson High School in Tifton, Georgia. After completing her education there, she moved to Ohio to further her studies at Franklin University and the Automation Institute of America. Her commitment to learning laid the foundation for a long and successful career.
On August 28, 1972, Sallie began her professional journey at the Credit Bureau of Columbus (CBC). Through hard work and perseverance, she rose through the ranks to become a respected supervisor. She remained dedicated to her role until her retirement in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and mentorship.
Faith played a central role in Sallie's life. As an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, she devoted herself to numerous committees, including the Nurture Committee, Evangelism & Neighborhood Outreach Committee, Lay Leadership Committee, Communion Stewards Committee, and Usher Committee. Her service reflected her deep commitment to helping others and strengthening her church community.
Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Sallie found joy in simple pleasures. She was passionate about tending to her flower beds and took great pride in nurturing vibrant blooms. She also enjoyed attending cultural events and volunteering with those who were sick or shut-in. One of her greatest joys was watching videos of her beloved granddaughter’s track races in the 100m, 200m, and 400m events.
Sallie is survived by her devoted daughter, Juliet Elain Streaty-Varnum; son-in-law, Dr. Dwight Lee Varnum; and cherished granddaughter, Zoey Leanne Varnum. She also leaves behind her sisters Daisy Williams (Gerald Williams) and Loretha Dassie; brothers Ray Gray, Charles Hamilton (Mary Anne Hamilton), and Walter Hamilton; sister-in-law Dr. Anne Streaty-Wimberly (Dr. Edward Wimberly); brother-in-law Tony Streaty (Linda Streaty); as well as longtime family friend Bob Grilli.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert H. Streaty Jr.; mother, Mrs. Bessie Hamilton; brother, Roosevelt Hamilton; sister, Dorothy Cobb; sister-in-law, Roberta J. Towell (Edward Towell); sister-in-law, Janice Gray; brother-in-law, Rev. Joseph Streaty; father-in-law Rev. Robert H. Streaty Sr.; his wife Valeska B. Streaty; and grandmother Nancy Gray.
Family and friends are invited to honor Sallie's life at a wake on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Schoedinger Funeral Home East, located at 5360 E Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the same location from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM. Interment will take place afterward at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
