Shawn Law, age 57, of Worthington, lost his nearly 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer on April 11, 2020. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He and his wife, Barbara, would have celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on August 8.
Shawn was born August 23, 1962, in Ashtabula, Ohio. A 1980 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell, Ohio, he attended Kent State University his freshman year. Shawn transferred to Ohio State his sophomore year and graduated on June 14, 1985, with a BS in Business Administration. He spent a few years in banking but worked the majority of his career as an insurance underwriter at various major companies. The last seven years he worked as a compliance examiner for the Ohio Department of Insurance.
Shawn was active in his church, Maple Grove UMC, and enjoyed hiking and traveling. In addition, he loved all sports. He played basketball and softball and was a devoted Buckeye fan. For 25 years he worked as a stringer for Ohio AP Sports Editor Rusty Miller at OSU home football and basketball games covering the visiting locker room press conferences. A big Pittsburgh fan, he was faithful to his Steelers and Pirates to the end but abandoned the Penguins once the Blue Jackets came to town. He and son Trevor also shared a love of all things English Premier League. They were able to attend an Arsenal match and a Leicester City match during a bucket-list trip to England in November 2019.
Shawn's favorite sports, though, were the ones Trevor played. Through T-ball, Soccer Tots, WYB basketball, travel baseball, lacrosse, football, hockey and beyond, Shawn was Trevor's biggest fan. He was so proud of Trevor's achievements on the field/ice and in the classroom. When Shawn was first diagnosed in May 2018 he mentioned at a lacrosse banquet that he hoped he would live long enough to see Trevor graduate from high school. Our lacrosse and hockey families made that happen, complete with cap and gown, the Worthington Schools superintendent, school board president, and assistant principal in attendance on April 2, 2020, in a small ceremony at our home. Lacrosse coach Collin Lisi presented Trevor with his diploma and there was a huge car parade to show community support for Shawn and our family.
A devoted son, husband, father and friend, Shawn was loved by many and will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Shirley Law. He is survived by wife Barbara, son Trevor, sister Sonya (Grant) Thullen and niece Maggie Thullen as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Shawn will be cremated and buried next to his parents in Pennsylvania. Due to the current situation the memorial service will be held this summer.
Our family would like to offer our sincerest thanks to our fabulous community and friends as well as the wonderful medical staff at the James and Capital City Hospice for the overwhelming support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or OSU's James Cancer Hospital.
