Shirley Ellis, 82, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 due to complications from dementia. Shirley is survived by her daughters Donna Ellis and Karen Dallas, son Tim Ellis, sister Ava Fields (Virgil), brothers Berchil Cogdill (Ocie), Bill Cogdill (Ethel), H.K. Cogdill (Diane), Charles Cogdill (Mary), and Jerry Cogdill (Wilma).
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents B.Z. and Ora Cogdill, husband James Ellis, Jr., son Roger Ellis, son-in-law Jeff Dallas, sister Patricia McDaniel, brothers Claude Cogdill , Clinton Cogdill and Freddie Lewis Cogdill, granddaughter Penny Ann, and grand dogs Fuego and Poncho.
Shirley was a quiet rebel. Although extremely shy, she was an incredible person. Shirley was very traditional and strong in her faith in God, but she was very non-traditional for her generation regarding social and political issues. She believed in equal rights for all and was a strong supporter of marriage equality long before it became law. Shirley believed everyone should be accepted and loved for who they are. She believed in love, peace, and happiness. Shirley knew joy and laughter despite all the sadness in the world. She always focused on the positive side of things.
Shirley loved animals, especially her grand puppies. She let them snuggle with her and kiss her. She was often found sound asleep with a dog on her lap or having a conversation with one of them while they intensely listened to "Grandma".
Shirley was always willing to help anyone and she particularly wanted to make sure no one went hungry and no dog was mistreated. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Soul Connections of Central Ohio (an animal rescue group) or the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff and STNA's at The Laurels of Mt. Vernon for their excellent care and love for our Mom. We would also like to thank Kindred Hospice for their compassion and for making her comfortable during her last days.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Columbus, on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 4:00 pm. Visiting hours will be prior to the service from 2:00-4:00.
