Thomas (Tom) Michael Fischer, age 69, of Bluffton, South Carolina and formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Monday, April 18th, 2022. He was born on May 8th, 1952, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Tom grew up in Grosse Pointe and then later moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend Capital University for his undergraduate degree in political science. He later received his master’s degree from Ohio University, and a Juris Doctorate from Capital University. He spent 35 years with the Columbus Police Department. He held several assignments during this time, some of which included supervising violent crime investigations, robbery, homicide, and special victim’s bureau. He played a key role in coordinating the construction of the police academy and was an instructor for new recruits as well. He was later promoted to Commander, which was the rank he held when he retired. He also had a law practice on the side.
He retired in 2013 and moved down to South Carolina. Known for his sharp wit and dry sense of humor, he would take any opportunity to make people laugh. Some of his hobbies included woodworking, going to the casino, playing cards with friends, pickleball, golf, metal detecting, and working on cold case files for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s office.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Fischer; mother, Dorothy (Penn) Fischer; and brother, Robert N. Fischer. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Leigh Fischer; siblings Jane Willard, Carol Lau, Dorothy Fischer Smith, Jim Fischer (Lena), and Debbie Dryer (Dennis); 16 nieces and nephews; and even more great-nieces and nephews.
