Thomas P. Zirwas, born February 28, 1940 in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, passed away on February 6th, 2023 in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his children. He follows his loving wife, Shirley Zirwas, who passed away in 2013 - they had been married for 50 years at the time of Shirley's passing. Tom was a proud father of 3, grandfather of 4, and great grandfather of 3. He was a self-made man who had a long and successful career. He was born and raised in McDonald, Pennsylvania, graduating from Lincoln High School in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania in 1958. He served in the army before attending night school at the University of Pittsburgh, studying business and accounting while working full time at Universal Cyclops in Bridgeville. He then worked as the accounting office manager at Diesel Construction where he was involved in the building of One Chatham Center and One Oliver Center in downtown Pittsburgh. He became the Assistant Controller at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh before becoming the Controller of Meadville City Hospital in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he was responsible for installing and programming the first mainframe computer at the hospital, as well as completing a 4 million dollar building program. From there he moved to Sewickley Hospital in Sewickley, Pennsylvania before becoming the Chief Financial Officer at Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital, where he spent the last 16 years of his career, again leading a successful building program that included a major bond issue. He was elected National President of the Healthcare Financial Managers Association. He had a strong Catholic Faith and was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. He was instrumental in installing lights for the football field at Mercer High School in Mercer, Pennsylvania where his children attended high school. He is survived by his children, Marsha, wife of Michael Wiesenbach, of Columbus, Ohio; Michael, husband of Brenda, Zirwas of Teasdale, Utah; and Matthew Zirwas, of Columbus, Ohio. He will be buried with his wife, Shirley, at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Pittsburgh. Services entrusted to Schoedinger East.
