Virginia "Jinny" S. Sherman

Virginia (Jinny) Sherman of Friendship Village of Dublin died peacefully Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Spencer Stanley, her sisters Jan and Annette, and her beloved son Jimbo, she is survived by her husband of 70 years, Richard (Dick) and her children and grandchildren: Rick (Nell), grandchildren Erica (Mike Stanley) and James; Sally (Art MacDonald), grandchildren Chelsea (Tim) Cloeter, Sherman Dippel (Jessica Strini), great-granddaughter Amalia Cloeter; Sherry (Tom Mansfield); Holly (Mel) Haft, grandchildren Nathan (Milene), Sunny, and Harmony (Ryman Weiman); Marion, grandchildren Richard and James; step-grandchildren Darin (Erin) MacDonald, Cheryl (Steve) Welsh, Holly (Warren) Pratt, Derek (Julia) MacDonald, numerous step-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Jinny was born on July 7, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio, lived many years in Birmingham, Michigan, attended college at the Stuart School in Boston, married in Michigan in 1941, and gave birth to six children between 1943 and 1961. She and her husband lived in Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, then Upper Arlington from 1961, before her move to Friendship Village of Dublin in 2004. She pursued a lifelong creative career in art, both commercially and for many local organizations. Beginning in 1984, with the help of her many Mac computers, she added writing to her creative and humorous endeavors. An avid and enthusiastic skier, she taught skiing at Mad River Mountain, Ohio, and was a champion Nastar ski racer, ranking first in the U.S. for over-70 women racers. An active tennis player, she proved her competitive mettle in matches at local courts and clubs, and taught tennis on her home court. Her skiing and tennis activities contributed to her being named the Columbus Citizen-Journal’s Outstanding Sports Woman of 1970. For many years, to their great enjoyment and education, she and Dick participated in trips to all continents, although their favorite destination remained skiing in the Rocky Mountains. Jinny was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Columbus Museum of Art Beaux Arts, UA Senior Center, Swim and Racquet Club, and Friendship Village of Dublin. An Episcopalian service will be held Friday, January 13, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 2151 Dorset Road in Upper Arlington, and a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Friendship Village of Dublin.
