Dear Isolde, Brenda, Arnold, Norbert and all family members, 

thank you for sharing your memories of Werner in this ceremony and webcast.
Even more than 4000 miles away I was touched by your speaches.
My tears stopped and a smile came to my face because of all your little stories, with some of them I had the honour to be a part of it.
Werner would love to hear all your speaches and of course he would laugh.

I´m grateful that I have met him and that I have so many nice memories.

My deepest condolences to Isolde and the entire Haas family. What a remarkable man Prof. Haas was! So kind, so gracious, friendly, so energetic, and gregarious. He lived a full life and positively affected many others.  
     Prof. Haas was my German teacher at Ohio State and became my all-time favorite teacher/professor in my college career which now spans some 5 decades. In fall of 1979 when I was applying to all of the medical schools in Germany, he took the time to review my applications, correcting and improving my German considerably with the result that I received an acceptance and was able to receive medical training. I just retired from active practice earlier this year. In no small way I am indebted to him for my professional career as a doctor.

Arnold, so sorry for your loss.  What I great picture.  93 is an achievement.  Mom was 90 3/4.

I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Isolde and the entire Haas family. They have greatly influenced my life. At age 17 in 1960, the first week of college, Professor Haas, asked for a babysitter. I raised my hand and Werner then became the major instrument for changing my life. I loved driving with him from Springfield to his home in Longmeadow where I took care of darling little Brenda and Arnold and soon new baby, Norbert. I was Werner’s student assistant for his German class at Springfield, and through his advice studied at the University of Vienna when he was on sabbatical in Mainz, and then studied German at Middlebury summer school where he was a professor.  Brenda was the flower girl in my wedding, and my husband and I hosted the whole family on their ski trips to the Colorado Mountains. It was a joy to be with Werner, Isolde, Kendal and Reilly on Maui where I now reside. Werner was my greatest guide and I am forever grateful for his friendship and presence in my life.

Back in the mid '80s, I was fortunate to be hired as a secretary in OSU's Department of German.  That Department felt like a family to me, and Werner was central to that.  He and other faculty in that Department encouraged me to take classes and earn my BA.  I had two small children at the time and sometimes it seemed overwhelming, but Werner encouraged me and helped me to believe in myself.  His smile lit up the room whenever he walked into our office.  I remember him as kind, caring, funny, and wonderful.

Arnold, Shari, and family, please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so incredibly sad to hear of Werner’s passing, and want to send my heartfelt condolence to Isolde and all the family.
Werner was my Breakfast Buddy every year at AIMS, where we happily solved the world’s problems over muesli and quarts of strong coffee…a walk with him through Graz was a walk through history, told with humor and kindness. He was so generous in every way, and I was especially thankful for his connections to the medical community in Graz when I needed assistance…I loved to tease him that everyone he went to kindergarten with in Graz, grew up to be a doctor, and he still knew every one of them!!

We were all so glad to see him at AIMS in 2019…as he did a little talk about growing up in Graz, I watched to student’s faces…there were smiles and intense concentration, and even tears.
He meant so much to so many, and we will all miss him terribly.

My sincere condolences to the Haas family.  Although I didn't know Mr. Haas, I have worked with Arnold for nearly seven years and know the dedication he has to his family.  I am keeping all of you in my prayers and know that God will grant you peach and grace as you remember a life so well lived.

Dear Werner,
In our last phone call I was very happy to hear your familiar and trusted voice. You said you were fine - as always - and you didn't complain about anything.
You have the gift of being satisfied with any situation and of having a positive view of things in everything. For example, after a day of skiing with snowfall and poor visibility, you can praise the great slopes, the wonderful snow or the few skiers on the slopes.
All these years, be it in Colorado, Graz or here in Augsburg, you are satisfied with everything and you also enjoy the little things. This contentment and balance are enviable.
I have always seen you open to other people. You approach them, speak to them and you listen carefully - to the President as well as to normal people. I remember many evenings and phone calls with long conversations and your empathy and interest in the life of your fellow human beings.
For years I have been really fascinated that you have an important mission: You want to introduce your grandchildren and great-grandchildren to skiing. You also integrated my son into this group by the way. The 2004 project “Werner, you still have to ski together with Niklas” has turned into many wonderful years together in Colorado. Your grandchildren and great-grandchildren are sure to feel the same way. Many people have experienced the fun of skiing as a result.
Over the years we have met again and again with your children, grandchildren or other relatives and friends in Colorado and thus became a small part of your large family. This has always been very important to you and we have been able to experience this especially in Colorado, where, for example, you called your children from the Horseshoe Bowl in Breckenridge. You are a great family man!
And over the years you have thought so much of others and put the well-being of others before yours. In 1995 you made use of your contacts and made it possible for Tina to do an internship at OSU lasting several weeks. Through her second internship in 1997, Tina came to the field of gynecology and thus remained successful in the field. Every morning you got up with Tina for her internship, you drank coffee with her and so you made the hard workday easier for her. Over the years you have influenced Tina's life in a positive and lasting way.
In Colorado you drove Isolde, your children, grandchildren and us to the ski slope. You were always concerned about the well-being of your guests and so relieved when the last descent in Keystone has ended without injury.
Since Tina was born almost 50 years ago, you in particular have never lost contact with Rolf and Karin and later with us. So your visits in autumn have become a very nice institution and so have your invitation to Colorado.
Most of all, your refreshing laugh is very typical for you. Because of your positive nature, you don't take yourself too seriously, which also makes you an "easy target". That is real great when you can laugh at yourself, but above all together.
You are a great role model for us, how to get through life positively. Your positive attitude can only be emulated.
Werner, thank you for many wonderful memories.
Werner, thank you for being my friend.

So sorry for your loss.  We are grateful to have shared so many skiing experiences with Werner and Isolde.  The whole Haas family has been so generous to us over the thirty-two years we have known you folks.  We are proud to know people of the caliber Werner, Isolde, Brenda, Arnold, and Norbert.  Werner and Isolde Haas show others how to live an active and fulfilling life.
