

William G. Keener, 86, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at his home at Wesley Glen, Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Bill was born on July 15th, 1928 in Painesville, Ohio to E. John and Rachel Keener. Preceded in death by Mother and Father; brother, Jack; first wife, Virginia; and son, Michael. Survived by wife, Peggy; sons, John (Cathy Josaitis) Keener and Matthew (Stefanni Walker) Keener; Daughters, Anne (Larry Shineman) Keener, Becky (Craig Wickman) Keener and Trish (Mark Stanley) Keener; stepchildren, Stacie (Kent) Smith, Andrea, Allison, Chris, and Matt (Joanna) Burns; eleven cherished grandchildren, Sam Keener, Glenn, Megan and Paul Stanley, Matthew and Connor Smith, Erica and Daniel Palmer, Cameron, Carson and Kendall Burns; and sister, Becky Deakin. At age 16, Bill entered Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania and received his BA in Political Science and his MA in History from The Ohio State University. His career began as Research Associate for the Ohio Historical Society. He then spent two years at Williamsburg as Research Associate for Decorative Arts, before returning to OSU and the Ohio Historical Society. For over 50 years at OHS, Bill wore many hats: Research Associate; Curator of History; Chief of the Education Division; Interim Director; Chief of the Office of Planning; Associate Director and Controller. During this time, Bill directed museum and restoration projects at over 16 State Memorial System sites including Adena and Zoar Village. He was mentor to several young museum novices who went on to have notable careers in the field. Bill was the guiding light and founding publisher of TIMELINE, the Ohio Historical Society's prize winning magazine. His lifelong interest and talent in photography can be seen in the captured images of his family, the beauties of nature and especially photos of his beloved England, Scotland and Wales - a truly lasting legacy. Bill will be missed by all of his family, including his dearly loved nieces and nephews, many friends and colleagues. No calling hours.
