William "Bill" Marcus Nolan died on June 27, 2025 in Columbus, OH. He was cremated and will be interred in the Memorial Garden at Lakeside Chautauqua in Lakeside, OH. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
He married Martha "Marty" Anne Pound on August 19, 1950. Together they had four daughters: Anne Nolan Michael (James) of Elyria, OH, Marcia Nolan of Lawrenceville, GA, Carol Nolan Drake (Fritz) of Columbus, OH and Mary Nolan Stimmel of Lakeside, OH. There are three granddaughters-Josie Michael, Mary Michael (Jesse Rowe) and Shelby Stimmel. Mary Michael also gave him four great-grandsons-Isaac, Liam, Elijah and Hunter. Marty preceded him in death in 1997.
He was born June 19, 1927 in Danville, IL to Clarence and Martha Nolan (Jones). He had a sister Thelma Burmeister (Herb), and a brother, C. Gerald Nolan (Sally), and a nephew Randy Nolan who all preceded him in death. Surviving members of his family in the Danville, IL area are his nephew, Dan Burmeister (Rosemary) and a niece, Kathy West.
He served in the US Navy from 1943-1947 as an Aviation Cadet then attended St. Thomas College in Minnesota, Iowa State College, and Kansas University while he was in the Navy. He soloed and took additional flight training in California and had not finished flight training when he was discharged. Afterwards he attended the University of Illinois and graduated in 1949 with a BS in Chemistry. He received an MS degree in Physical Chemistry in 1950.
His business career included:
1950-1953 Olin Industries East Alton, IL
1953-1955 Southern Research Institute Birmingham, AL
1955-1962 American Viscose Corp Philadelphia, PA
1962-1986 Marathon Oil Co Findlay, OH where he retired as Manager of Corporate Risk and Environmental Affairs
He also taught Chemistry at the University of Alabama while living there and Business and Marketing at the University of Findlay.
In addition, he had many professional memberships: President of the Ohio Chapter of the American Marketing Association in 1967-69, The American Chemical Society, The Chemists Club of New York City, The Engineers Club of Philadelphia, Chemical Marketing Research Association, Commercial Chemical Development Association and the American Petroleum Association.
He also was a member of Kiwanis International, The Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, The Travel Club of Cincinnati, and Messiah Lutheran Church of Green Hills, OH. Bill enjoyed antique and classic cars-owning many over the years. He loved restoring and driving around in them--often wearing a scarf and cap, as well as bridge, golf, tennis and shuffleboard. He was accomplished and competitive in all of them. For several years he summered in Lakeside, OH and wintered in Naples, FL which allowed him to enjoy these activities year-round.
Bill remarried on March 20, 1999 to M. Anne Willmann of Cincinnati, OH. She also had a home in Lakeside, OH so he continued to enjoy family and friends there for almost 25 years before she preceded him in death in 2024. He was a stepfather to her children: Doug, Kevin (Debbie), Dan, DeAnne, and Rebecca and a grandfather of fifteen and a great-grandfather of twenty-one.
He lit up the room with his smile, humor, and ability to recall memories and share them with others. Time spent with family was his greatest joy. He had an amazing will to live and only moved to Wesley Glen Retirement Community recently.
The family wishes to express our deep appreciation for the exemplary care and support over the last sixteen months of his life from Dr. Timothy Coss and the team at Central Ohio Primary Care, the nurses, caregivers, and the team from Wesley Glen Retirement Community, and the nurses and caregivers from Ohio’s Hospice, who all treated him with dignity and respect.
