

Cornelius “Connie” Gaine of Valley Cottage, NY passed away on March 22, 2025. Connie was born in Kenmare, Country Kerry, Ireland to John and Rose Gaine. After working jobs in Ireland and England, he emigrated to the United States where he was welcomed into the Brooklyn brownstone of his aunt and uncle.
Connie honorably served in the US Army and was part of the 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles").
In 1959, he started his long, distinguished career with The New York Times. He began as a paper-handler, worked his way up to Assistant Foreman and finished his career in 1998 after 10 years as the General Foreman of the paper-handlers. He received a wonderful retirement send off with an enjoyable luncheon in the boardroom with his family by his side.
Connie is survived by his daughter, Mary Bridget, son John, daughter-in-law Denise, grandchildren Sophia and Peter and companion Gayle Raso. He also had many wonderful friends from his childhood in Kenmare, The New York Times, his neighborhood, and the Congers I Senior Club where he made and served the coffee for many years.
He was predeceased in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary.
Connie was a parishioner of St Paul’s Church for 54 years. He loved his family, was happiest with a dog by his side, and was that rare person with continued luck on slot machines and with lottery tickets. He was a frequent visitor to Rockland Lake. Connie will be greatly missed by all who love him.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 27 at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in Congers,NY from 2pm – 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 28 at St. Paul's Church in Congers at 11:30am. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery in Congers.
