Katherine Anne Mangan was born on January 4, 1946, to James and Katherine McIntyre. She was the only girl and the eldest of three younger brothers. She grew up in Rockland Lake (Congers), New York, and from an early age was bright, determined, and always saw the glass half full. She built a life filled with love, adventure, meaningful work, and, above all, devotion to her family.
She graduated from Albertus Magnus High School in 1964 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University, followed by two master’s degrees at Columbia University. She began her nursing career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, later moving into hospital administration, and also served as a nursing instructor at Rockland Community College, where she shared her passion for caring and teaching.
One of her most cherished moments was placing the nursing cap on her own mother, Kay, when she earned her degree at Rockland Community College in her late forties — a memory that reflected their special bond.
In 1962, while working at Rockland Lake State Park, she met John, and it was love at first sight. They married in December 1967 and built a life together filled with love, partnership, and adventure. While John served in the Air Force, they lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Taiwan before returning to Congers, where they raised their daughter, Katherine, and later their son, John.
Home was always the heart of her life. She took great pride in being a wife and mother, coaching her children in softball and basketball, and creating a home filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
She loved animals, piloted small, single-engine airplanes, and practiced martial arts. She was always learning, always doing, and never defined by just one role.
Her greatest joy was her five grandchildren — Brittany, Julia, Jack, John, and Summer. She loved watching them play sports, cheering them on, and taking pride in their unique talents and accomplishments.
She will be remembered for her strength, compassion, and unwavering love for her family. She taught through her work, led by example, and gave a lifetime of lessons in perseverance, kindness, and the importance of being there for one another.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Edward; her cherished son, John, and his wife, Shirley; and her five adored grandchildren, Brittany, Julia, Jack, John, and Summer. She leaves behind a family shaped by her love and forever connected by the life and memories they shared with her.
