Michael John Queenan
November 23, 1945 – August 31, 2020
Michael (Mike) John Queenan, 74, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 23, 1945 in the Bronx, NY, to the late Patrick Queenan and May (Quinn) Queenan.
Mike was raised in the Bronx, NY and loved playing sports, especially basketball. After graduating from Cardinal Spellman H.S., he was recruited to Manhattan College on a full basketball scholarship. Later Mike was inducted into the Cardinal Spellman H.S. Hall of Fame.
He graduated with both a BA in Education (class of ‘67) and MA in English from Manhattan College (class of ‘71), and devoted his 33-year long career to the City of New York as an educator. Mike taught at both the Charles Drew Intermediate School and John F. Kennedy High School. He retired in 2001.
Mike was a true family man. He married the love of his life, Barbara Travers, in 1967 at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, Bronx, NY. They moved to Congers, NY in July of 1975 where they raised their 3 children; Michael, Christopher, and Carolyn. Their love grew even greater with the addition of their extended family to include Michael’s wife Sandra and granddaughter Riley of North Hampton, NH; Chris’ wife Francesca and granddaughters Natalie and Jessica of Matawan, NJ; and Carolyn’s husband John D’Adamo and granddaughters Brynn, Madelyn, and Kaylie of New City, NY. They were married for 52 wonderful years.
He was also a wonderful brother to his sisters, Sr. Anne Queenan and Kathleen Carroll, and his brother, the late Stephen Queenan, and was blessed with many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Above all, Mike was a very kind, caring, selfless person. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Parish, a volunteer in many organizations to help those in need, and his kids’ biggest fan at their sporting events. He loved going to the Borgota Resort in Atlantic City with Barbara and on family trips with his kids and grandkids. Being ‘Papa’ to his six granddaughters was one of his greatest joys. He was an incredible son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
