Theodora “Doris” Yurtchuk left this world on December 22nd after a brief illness, surrounded by her children and those she loved. She was just one month shy of her 95th birthday. She is survived by her daughter Diane (Yurtchuk) Ciorla and Ron Avallone, her son John “Johnny” and his wife Carolyn, her two stepsisters, Mary (Dupnak) Wall, Nancy (Dupnak) Danilchick, her Mother’s brothers and family in Chicago and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was born on January 23, 1929 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to her Ukrainian-born parents Anna and Roman Luniak. Roman passed away when Doris was only ten years old but her Mother survived until she was 88. “Nana Anna” owned a grocery store on Dupont Street in Greenpoint that was featured in an article written by Doris for Reminisce magazine in March 2012. Many happy family memories were had with Anna in her Jackson Heights home where the Yurtchuk family lived until 1963 before moving to New City.
Doris married the love of her life in 1954, John Yurtchuk, whose family also had emigrated to Greenpoint from the Ukraine. He pre-deceased Doris suddenly in 1984 while Doris was working as an executive assistant for his newly-formed property development company, Madison Construction.
Her daughter Diane selflessly was a constant companion for Doris including indulging her favorite pastime, dining in fine restaurants! Many trips and special events graced Doris’ long life including extended stays at a family home in Ocean Ridge, Florida, and trips up and down the east coast. She attended many of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s season opening Gala events and was at the final American Red Cross International Ball held at Mar-a-Lago in 2017, attended by President Trump. Through her son John who lives in Buffalo, many mutual friends in Western New York are also mourning her passing along with family friends in Rockland. She always had a smile and endeared herself to everyone who knew her.
She will be remembered at a viewing on Wednesday, December 27th from 3-7 p.m. at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home at 113 Lake Road East in Congers, NY.
