Carol Brown

Carol Jeannine Brown, 64 of Connersville, died at her home Tuesday morning, May 13, 2014. Carol was born April 17, 1950 in Covington, Kentucky to Carl and Grace West Fields. She was a 1967 graduate of Connersville High School. Carol earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1974 and a Master’s degree in Education from Ball State University in 1979. She was employed as a sixth grade teacher at Eastview Elementary School, retiring in 2010. Carol was recognized for excelling as a teacher with many distinctions, including PSI Elementary Energy Leadership State Winner, Youth Awards Program Outstanding State Project and was twice named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She also was named Wal-Mart 2002 Teacher of the Year, received a certificate of merit from the Gifted and Talented Education initiative and was nominated for the Disney American Teacher Award. Carol was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and since 1976 had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi serving as president for five years. Carol is survived by her husband, Danny L. Brown, whom she married January 3, 1987 in Centerville; daughters: Suzanne Bigler Ritchie of Connersville ;Jennifer Bigler Schreck and her husband, Nathan of Fishers; mother: Grace Becker of Carson City, NV; brother: Gerald Byington and his wife, Mary of Carson City, NV; grandchildren: Lauren Kristine and Eric Fettinger of Fishers; Sarah Marie Ritchie of Connersville; nephews: Christopher Byington of Carson City, NV; Alan and Kristen Hinshaw of Richmond; mother-in-law: Betty Lou Brown of Centerville; sister in laws: Donna Brown of Englewood, OH; Susan Hinshaw and her husband, Bruce of Richmond. Carol is preceded in death by her father. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday at Showalter-Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Micah Mathis of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday where memorial contributions may be made to the IU Health North Philanthropy Department.
