Gilbert was born March 3, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to James Gilbert and Annabelle Levi Jackson. He was a 1959 graduate of Connersville High School. Following graduation, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Navy as a boiler man. During his time, he visited 42 countries, an experience he knew he could not get any other way. Gilbert was honorably discharged in 1963 after serving his county for four years. He was employed with Roots Dresser Industries for thirty-years, and later was employed for eighteen years with Hartzell Restoration. When Gilbert met the former Cheryl Jones, he knew it was love at first sight; they married on October 31, 1964. Gilbert was an excellent woodworker, with the knowledge to create anything from furniture, to name cuttings on key chains. He was an avid traveler who always had his wife by his side; together they took many vacations across the country including tours out west and trips down the coast of Florida. Gilbert had a passion for drag racing and sports cars of all make and models. Above all, Gilbert loved spending every moment with his wife, children, and grandchildren – they were his entire world. He will be remembered as the best husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who know and love him.
