My heartfelt thoughts prayers and condolences going out to Joel's family and friends. Our community has lost a great man!! I was saddened to hear of Joel's passing, he has been there for my family in our darkest days nearly 4 decades. My first experience with a death in the family that I can remember was when my maternal grandmother passed away when i was 14 yrs old. Joel was such a God send!! And as the years rolled by most of my family that crossed to the other side were laid out at Showalter,Blackwell and Long. Always recieved the best of service from Joel and his amazing staff!!! When my son passed over 3 yrs ago Joel went above and beyond to get us through the most difficult tragic time in our lives!! Even after all the service was concluded he made contact and kept checking on my family!! The Lord knew what he was doing when he called Joel to become a mortician because he had a heart born to comfort!! Our loss is definitely heavens gain!!

I was so saddened to hear that Joel has passed. My best friend, Marlena (Pete) Davidson Becker just informed me of his passing. My heartfelt sympathies to all his family and friends. I will always remember the great times in High School. He was always one step ahead of authority. His way with words and charm were unlike anything I had encountered. He was innovative and a trendsetter. He listened to others and made everyone feel important. His dry sense of humor was unwavering. He loved to call the elderly, as well as all the Teachers by their first name, and could somehow get away with that! The memories of his laughter and kindness will always be cherished.

God Bless,
Karen

Dear Vickie and family, I am saddened about your loss of your dear Joel. I am a Orange raised gal and my siblings and I all knew the Long family. I want to let you know how much I enjoyed the pictures you all shared. To see Joel’s parent young again with all the little Long’s gave me occasion for tears for the past.
To see your family and all the love you have for each other is very heart warming. Joel loved you all very much. He talked of the triplets often. It was fun to see Joel in the long hair again.
I am saddened that Joel suffered but I want to share with you a statement that Mother Teresa of Calcutta wrote, “Suffering is a sign that you have come so close to Jesus that he can kiss you.”
God bless you all in your suffering of the lost of your dear Joel. Georgia & Fred Lucas

We share with the sadness of your family in the untimely loss of a most kind, and gentle natured gentleman. We send our deepest condolences. Joel has done so much for the town we live in, and has done it without pretense. Connersville is and will be forever changed by his contributions in many areas. His warm smile and genuine greetings were always a comfort when entering a wake. Joel handled both my parents' funerals, and he did it with great care , kind understanding, and accommodation in our time of sadness.
Along with you Vickie, and your family, the town of Connersville, we will miss his presence. May God bless you and give your family peace during your time of grief.

Mrs. Long,

I’m saddened to hear of Joel’s death. I have received information on how he was progressing over the past several months from several professional associates from our death care providers. I became acquainted with Joel through our SCI affiliation by working in Columbus. I wish you and your family the best in this sad time. He served many very well in his career. He fought the fight well! Peace to you and yours!
