Nevin Selke

Nevin R. Selke, 73, of Connersville, died Friday afternoon, July 15, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after becoming ill at home.
A Connersville native, Nevin was born July 28, 1942 to Narvel W. and Geraldine E. Lawrence Selke. He was a 1960 graduate of Connersville High School and continued his education at Jones College and Troy State both in Jacksonville, Florida. He had also studied to obtain a bachelors degree in business maintenance management. Nevin was a U.S. Navy veteran where he served for twenty-three years as an aircraft engine mechanic. He had also worked as a civil service employee for twenty-two years. Nevin was a member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and had attended Higher Praise Worship Center. He was the founder of Krusaders for Kids and had been a Shriner since 1982 where he was a member of the Hillbilly Clan helping to raise over $18,000 for the Shriner’s Hospital.
Nevin also was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fleet Reserve Association, Loyal Order of the Moose, United Methodist Men and was named as a Kentucky Colonel. He held dual memberships in the Free and Accepted Masons in Stafford Caldwell Lodge of Jacksonville, Florida and Warren Lodge of Connersville. Nevin had served as ambassador to the Morocco Temple, Jacksonville, Florida and sang in the community choir. Nevin enjoyed decorating and all the festivities of Christmas.
Nevin is survived by his wife, Sue Lunsford Selke whom he married April 1, 2016; his children and their spouses: J. Christopher Selke and Marcie of Jacksonville, Florida; Tisha R. Gonzalez of Sarasota, Florida, step-sons: Joe Means and his wife, Cheri of Indianapolis; William Grant Stanton and Terry Lee Riker, both of Connersville; grandchildren: Kyle and Alex Selke of Jacksonville, Florida; George Pilgrim IV of Sarasota, Florida; step-grandchildren: Jessie Means of Indianapolis; Cheryl Burns of Cambridge City, William Grant Stanton, Jr. of Richmond; a great-grandson; his brother: Nolen Selke and his wife, Jeannie of Connersville; his sister-in-law Kathy Selke of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nieces and nephews; .
In addition to his parents, Nevin was preceded in death by his previous wife, Jane Miller Selke; his brother, Narvel Selke and a step-son: Steven Brent Riker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Pastor Richard Ware officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday where masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday by Warren Lodge #15, F.& A.M. A public graveside service for Nevin R. Selke who died July 15, 2016, will be conducted at 11a.m. Thursday at Dale Cemetery, section L. Military graveside honors will be presented by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, is in charge of the arrangements.
