He is preceded in death by parents John Alfred “Fred” and Esther Marie (Budd), brother Gale Broman, sister Doris Anderson and grandson Jonathan Broman.
He graduated from Denfeld High School, Duluth, MN in 1952 and attended various schools for Business and Data Processing including the University of Minnesota, Lutheran Biblical Institute and Durham Business College.
Budd served 4 years in the United States Air Force where he played alto saxophone in the USAF band, traveling all over the country to play at various events. While in the Air Force, he obtained his private pilot’s license.
In 1955, he married the love of his life, Margaret Simonson, whom he met while in Confirmation class at Bethel Lutheran church in Duluth, MN. Budd and Margaret shared a love for music singing in the church choir and in later years played dinner music for various events with their daughter Judy.
He worked for Oliver Iron Mining for 4 years as a Tab Operator. When the company closed in 1963, Budd and Margaret moved their growing family to Blaine, MN. He then worked for Anoka County in Data Processing as an Assistant Data Processing/Assistant Operations manager. In 1994, after 27 years, he retired from Anoka County. He always seemed to have a part-time job whether it be at Schmitt Music, Radio Shack or the Appliance Service Center of Blaine, MN.
Budd had many hobbies that he shared with his family including swimming, fishing, music, camping, canoeing, building Radio Controlled air planes, televisions and stereo systems. He also loved to walk to get his exercise and was often seen as a “Mall Walker” at Northtown Mall. On one occasion when preparing for a canoe trip, he hoisted his canoe on his shoulders and started walking around the block near his home. He didn’t get very far before a squad car pulled him over with the officer asking him where he was taking the canoe. The officer thought Budd was stealing it. His life was filled with many such stories.
On one of the family canoe trips in the Boundary Waters, Budd was the navigator as we paddled on a ridiculously long lake. Getting to the end of the lake we searched for the portage, but, it was nowhere to be found. What went wrong? It was discovered that Budd was holding the map upside down and guided us to the wrong end of the lake.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Simonson), his children Cheryl (Dale) Haluptzok, Donna (Bill) Broman, Judy (Warren) Porter, Nancy (Jeff) Mengelkoch, Michael (Kara) Broman, (4) grandchildren: Chris Haluptzok, Kelly Vigstol, Jenna Broman, Matthew Broman, (7) great grandchildren and (1) great-great grandchild.
